Tenure-Track Assistant Professor and Visiting Assistant Professor Positions in Gender and Women’s Studies at Pomona College
Gender and Women’s Studies at Pomona College seeks applications for two positions: a tenure-track Assistant Professor as well as a Visiting Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2023. We seek a colleague whose research focuses on black and/or indigenous q***r-trans and/or feminist theory, whose methodologies emerge from the intersection of these fields with interdisciplinary or disciplinary work primarily in the social sciences, with consideration given to the humanities. Some areas of interest include but are not limited to: critical ethnography, geography, disability studies, movement histories, activism, media studies, performance studies, and racial capitalism. Transnational and/or hemispheric approaches are welcome, across any geographic spectrum.
Gender and Women’s Studies is a vital and growing program philosophically, politically, and pedagogically centered on intersectional, woman of color, transnational and q***r of color history, culture, and theory. The teaching load at Pomona College is two courses per semester. Faculty are expected to teach across all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and are eligible for generous teaching and research grants. Candidates should have Ph.D. in hand at time of appointment. Complete application includes: (a) cover letter, (b) curriculum vitae, (c) graduate transcripts, (d) three brief statements – one addressing teaching philosophy and experience, one addressing scholarship and future research directions, and one addressing demonstrated ability to mentor a diverse student body, and (e) three letters of recommendation. Please apply through Academic Jobs Online (linked below). Candidates should indicate in their cover letter if they would also like to be considered for the Visiting Assistant Professor position, which requires teaching an additional course in either semester. Dr. Elliott H. Powell: “On the Corner with Miles: Queerness, South Asianness and the Coalitional Black Politics of Miles Jo Davis-McElligatt
WHEN Tuesday, March 23, 2021, 2:30 – 3:30pm
WHERE Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION
In the summer of 1972, jazz artist Miles Davis released On the Corner, his first jazz-fusion studio album that deliberately sought to address African American political consciousness of the early 1970s. For example, the album art depicted men in red, green, and black as well as black leather coats and berets, serving as visual allusions to Pan-Africanism and the Black Panther Party, respectively. Along with these visual signifiers of 1970s Black politics, the music of On the Corner emphasized funk rhythmic patterns that were reminiscent of James Brown, Sly Stone, and The Last Poets, all Black power cultural icons of the late 1960s/early 1970s. And yet, despite these visual and musical expressions of early 1970s Black political thought, there were two elements of On the Corner that ran antithetical to dominant discourses of Blackness and Black politics at this time: q***rness and South Asianness. Indeed, South Asian music and musicians played a central role in the album; and the album cover art heavily featured Black q***r identities and expressions. How, then, might we make sense of these sonic and visual elements of On the Corner that do not align with dominant representations of Black politics and life at the time? This talk addresses this question by revisiting the music, visual art, and sociohistorical context of On the Corner, and argues that the album linked and articulated South Asian sound and alternative sexualities as constitutive formations—formations that dually animated and expanded notions of Blackness and Black politics of the early 1970s.
