Hi everyone,

As we are nearing the end of the semester, the Economics department is looking to recruit liaisons for the academic session 2022-23. Simply put, the liaisons are students who are passionate about improving the department; we do this by organising events or lunches, discussing student feedback with the department chair, and bridging the gap between students and professors, amongst other things.

Some of the events we hosted this year include the Economics Department Social w Some Crust pastries, the Student-Faculty mixer, and the student colloquium (happening in April, details to follow! 👀).

If you are interested in applying, please fill this form by Friday, April 15th, 11.59 pm PST: https://forms.gle/noby3AWhrDR5t9S38

Feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] if you have any questions!

To whom it may concern,

We are contacting you on behalf of the student-run organization, Pomona Ventures, to support SageTank pitch competition in Spring of 2022.

What is Pomona Ventures?
PV is a student-run club that promotes entrepreneurship at the Claremont Colleges through events and competitions. We’re the oldest business-related organization at the Claremont Colleges with over 10 years of operating history.
Every spring, Pomona Ventures hosts its annual SageTank competition. Inspired by the TV series Shark Tank, student entrepreneurs pitch their startup ideas to a panel of Venture Capitalists. After the selection of the top three cash prize winners, Pomona Ventures opens doors of opportunities for these budding entrepreneurs to through mentorships from C-suite executives and one-on-one sessions with top Venture Capital firms.

Why should I be interested?
From a water bottle company dedicated to combating the global water crisis to an app that improves literacy among children in rural India, Pomona Ventures has nurtured and elevated students’ ideated passions into successful realities. At Pomona Ventures, we see the level of creative and entrepreneurial talent that exists within our current student body - and beyond. In fact, we ourselves were impressed to find that, between 2006 and 2019, Claremont graduates raised $26.0 billion in total venture dollars – categorically more than any other university system in the world save for Stanford, Harvard, and Berkley (source: Between the Lines).
Not only does this show the impressive level of impact our CC alums have been making globally, but it also opens a window of opportunity to bridge a connection between our current and former students. For this reason, for this year’s Sage Tank application cycle, we are inviting both undergraduate students and alumni to apply and compete for grand cash prizes and more!

This is incredible! How can I help?
Our vision is big and quite a hefty feat, and in order to make this event as wide-reaching as possible, we’d love to have it featured in the department newsletter. It is imperative that students know and understand the value of this event so that they are interested in applying. The department newsletter is the perfect forum to reach a great number of students.

Please feel free to reach out for any additional information. Pomona Ventures’ Co-Presidents, Nanea Haynes (PO’22) and Shreya Kamra (PO’23) would be more than happy to give a personal pitch and more information on Sage Tank.

We look forward to connecting with you.

PREDOC 09/28/2022

The University of Chicago Booth School of Business (https://www.chicagobooth.edu/faculty/research-staff) has launched its fall recruiting cycle for pre-docs. Pre-docs (sometimes called Research Professionals or full-time RAs) are two-year full-time appointments working directly for faculty on their research in the quantitative social sciences (QSS), like economics, business, political science, behavioral science, and others. Students who are interested in graduate study in QSS fields but do not yet feel ready for a PhD program, or who are uncertain whether they want to pursue a PhD, find these positions to be especially useful. Students with rigorous quantitative backgrounds outside of the social sciences (e.g., physics, engineering) have used the pre-doctoral path to transition into QSS fields. Through their work for faculty, pre-docs expand their research toolkit, learn more about the research process, and pick up important credentialing through faculty letters of reference. These are competitively paid positions with full benefits.

If you know of students at any stage in their undergraduate career who might be interested in a research career, please encourage them to visit our website (https://www.chicagobooth.edu/faculty/research-staff) to learn more. Students can sign up (https://airtable.com/shrkJmMqmsx9mT3y7) to hear about new job opportunities when they are ready to apply (e.g., a freshman could sign up to hear about new postings in three years). The PREDOC Consortium (https://predoc.org/) also provides a wealth of programming and information sessions (https://predoc.org/events), as well as guides to the pre-doc application process (https://predoc.org/learn-more). PREDOC’s offerings are growing rapidly, so students should sign up to receive updates (https://predoc.us1.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=6496dd0eb10728ee225978509&id=cbc2f512df).

Staff at Booth and PREDOC are more than happy to answer any questions you or your students have about pre-doctoral opportunities. Please email us at [email protected] or [email protected] with any questions or to arrange a meeting or information session. Please don’t hesitate to reach out as one of our goals at Booth is to reduce as much as possible the informational frictions surrounding these positions, to help you advise your students effectively.

Sincerely,
Stephen

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is proud to invite students from your institution to take part in this year’s FDIC Academic Challenge, a competition for undergraduate students interested in banking and economics. This year’s Challenge, “The Impacts of Higher Interest Rates on the Banking Sector,” asks students to explore how a rising interest rate environment affects the nation’s financial institutions. The Challenge will provide students the chance to work with their peers, sharpen their analytical thinking, and develop their academic and professional skills.

Teams of four or five undergraduate students, along with a faculty advisor, are welcome to submit a written response to this year’s Challenge. Teams will have the opportunity to use multiple data sources to support their economic analysis and gain a greater understanding of the U.S. banking sector. We will invite teams with top-scoring written responses in the first round to present their findings in front of a panel of judges in the final round of the Challenge on April 14, 2023. We are planning to host the final round of the Challenge in person at FDIC facilities in the Washington, D.C. area.

First-round written submissions for the Challenge are due by November 18, 2022. To help students and faculty understand the Challenge and address any issues that arise during participation, FDIC economists will host an online question and answer session on October 3, 2022 at 7pm. Information on how to access the session will be posted on the Academic Challenge website.

For more details on the Academic Challenge, including the full question, dataset, timeline, and submission form, please visit https://www.fdic.gov/analysis/academic-challenge/. You can sign up to receive announcements and updates about the competition by joining our email distribution list, https://fdicfedramp.gov1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aYurVXWWKq8aj66.

Fintech Incubator Program Application - Summer 2022

My name is Martin Hiti, and I am reaching out to invite all interested students at Pomona College to apply to this year’s Carroll Round Undergraduate Economics Research Conference, which will be held from April 21st through April 24th, 2022. Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis until 11:59 PM March 20th, 2022

The Carroll Round is an undergraduate economics conference hosted in person at Georgetown University. The conference provides a unique forum for the world’s best undergraduate students studying economics to present and discuss their original research/senior theses. All the accepted papers will have the chance to be published in the Carroll Round Proceedings. This year, we are honored to host Nobel Laureate Dr. Joshua Angrist as our keynote speaker!

We are hoping to expand the list of schools from which we regularly receive submissions, and we are especially interested in applications from students at Pomona College. We believe that the original research conducted by students for the Economics Deprtment at Pomona College will make for exceptional contributions to the conference.

For more information on the history of the conference and the application process, please visit our website. Should you have any questions about the conference or the information, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected], or me personally at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!
