Marina Aina, a 21-year-old student majoring in American Studies at Pomona College, poses for photos on the school's campus in Claremont, Calif., Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022. Aina was used to getting paid for her internships and could not see taking an unpaid opportunity over a summer job. "If I felt that it wasn't compensated then I wouldn't go for it because I wouldn't have the funds to cover it," Aina says. "I wouldn't want to ask my parents, who are helping me pay for college, to pay for something I'm doing over the summer."

Susanne Mahoney Filback is the Associate Director of Preprofessional programs and Prelaw Advisor in the Career Development Office. She has been selected as president-elect of the Pacific Coast Association of Prelaw Advisors, one of the six regional professional associations that make up PLANC (Prelaw Advisors National Council). She will serve in this role for one year before beginning her three-year term as president.

Fellowship Spotlight Fridays are back! β¨
Franco Liu β20 was awarded the Downing Scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge for 2020-21.
Liu had never heard of the field of linguistics before coming to Pomona College. An international student from China, Liu was interested in exploring gender and womenβs studies β but as fate would have it, by chance he ended up taking Introduction to Linguistics taught by Professor Michael Diercks during his first year of college. The experience ended up being βserendipitous,β Liu said.

The CDO is excited to welcome back, Tara! π π
Tara is a senior from Cary, IL majoring in Russian and Eastern European Studies and minoring in media studies. She is interested in the arts and entertainment industries, especially in screenwriting and publishing. On campus, she participates in the Animation Club and 5x5 Film. She also enjoys playing board games, binging Love Island, and is hoping to bake more now that she has five suitemates to share brownies with. At the CDO, Tara aims to help students through any part of the career development process and guide them to the individualized resources they need.

Olivia is a junior from Tuscaloosa, AL majoring in public policy analysis with sociology and minoring in Africana Studies. With her degree, she hopes to one day work as an elementary and secondary education policy advocate. Apart from the CDO, Olivia is an OBSA mentor and the Board of Trustees Representative for the Educational Quality Committee. In her free time, she likes to upcycle clothing and play tennis, but this semester she wants to continue the habit of reading she had over Summer break. Olivia is excited to get to know you and help ease the stress of the career-development process.

Kevin is studying both economics and mathematics. He attended Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, IL prior to Pomona College and came into college on the Pre-Health track before realizing that his heart was really with Economics and Mathematics. Outside of school, he loves reading history books, playing soccer, playing poker, and investing himself in projects like creating mixtapes and YouTube videos for friends.

Ulas is a junior from Izmir, Turkiye (Turkey) majoring in computer science. They hope to pursue a CS career in which they can make a positive impact on their community/the world. When not working at the CDO, you can find them running on the track field, climbing at the Hangar 18 indoor climbing gym, or playing beach volleyball with their friends on Walker Beach. This year they have committed themselves to enjoying every single day on campus while maintaining a more healthy sleep schedule compared to that of last year, their first year on campus. Ulas hope to provide individualized support and encouragement with warm smiles, specifically focusing on underrepresented and international students.

Vidusshi is a sophomore from Mumbai, India intending to double major in psychology and gender and women studies. She is interested in representing marginalized communities by advocating for educational equality and egalitarianism. She is passionate about writing, theatre for change, and public speaking. She is a team member of Pomona College Mock Trial, a staff writer for the Arts and Culture section of The Student Life, and a member of Tamasha Dance. When sheβs not finishing school work, you can find her conducting interviews for TSL, drawing mind maps at the hive, or eating at Bua Thai. Vidusshi hopes to provide support and encouragement to her fellow peers by fostering a community between the CDO and students. π

Htet is a junior from Yangon, Myanmar double majoring in Asian Studies and economics. He hopes to pursue a career in business, specifically in management or strategy consulting after graduation. When not working at the CDO, you can find him at the Oasis pool trying to survive the sweltering heat or at events hosted by the International Student Mentor Program (ISMP) around campus. During his free time, Htet spends most of his time with his friends or catching up on much-needed sleep. Htet hopes to give the individualized support you need to grow and overcome any professional obstacles. π―

During her time at Pomona, she hopes to increase female representation in finance and create a safe and inclusive environment for international students. π
