Stay tuned for events related to this year's theme,
You Just Believe That Because…
Your most cherished beliefs did not emerge in a vacuum. You believe what you do because of who and where you are, your personal trajectory, and, ultimately, the long history of events and ideas leading up to your life. This is sometimes emphasized by others as a way to debunk or undermine one’s views. These kinds of objections are familiar: “You just believe that because you’re a woman!” “You just believe that because you’re friends with the defendant!” or “You just believe that because you’re Jewish!” These kinds of objections can sometimes succeed in bringing to light one’s biases; other times they seem to miss the mark and point out the biases of the objector instead. If we are going to learn from one another, and discuss topics of interest within our community and think together, we should get clear on the significance of the genealogy of beliefs, so we can better understand, and more accurately gauge, our own and each other’s credibility. This semester the Humanities Institute will focus on whether, and why, it matters what are the causes and origins of our beliefs, including those about justice, morality, religion, beauty, and the world.

Moira Mulhern, a Scripps senior and Environmental Analysis major, is rounding out her degree with the Humanities Institute this spring. “I wanted to take advantage of all of the diverse academic resources/disciplines at Scripps before I graduate.”
As an environmentally-focused student, Moira feels especially passionate about learning and bringing attention to the philosophies of the native peoples of the land we are on. This semester, she has been looking internally to challenge the subconscious manifestations of her Western upbringing. “We have talked a lot about trying to understand these texts and speakers on their own terms, for their own merit or outside of what they mean in an American context. It's a really important exercise to shed all of the Western baggage and preconceived notions and try to understand these ideas in a (hopefully) more authentic way.”
After Moira graduates in just a few weeks with the Class of 2021, she hopes to work in the intersection of food justice and food sustainability. Ideally, she wants to work at an urban garden. We’re cheering you on, Moira! 🤗📚🌳

If you enjoyed our conversation with Dr. Waters or want to learn more, consider courses from the new Scripps College minor in Native American/Indigenous Studies, the first of its kind at the Claremont Colleges! Thank you, Dr. Waters!

Meet Kerry Wong, a Scripps sophomore majoring in Human Biology. Inspired by her Core III class, LA Rock ’n’ Roll with Professor Hao Huang, Kerry sought out the Humanities Institute to expand her perspective beyond the Western influence. “I’ve had few opportunities to learn from non-European lenses, so it’s been eye-opening to learn from the HI speakers and reflect on our individual privilege while making space for other voices, especially those who have been diminished and marginalized.” With the semester coming to a close, Kerry is looking forward to Olúfẹmi Táíwò’s lecture on May 4th. “I am particularly excited about Olúfẹmi Táíwò's event because of his research on the philosophy of law and constitutionalism in Africa.” 📚🌞 P.S. Isn’t Kerry’s outdoor set-up amazing?!

Meet Scripps sophomore and Humanities Fellow Chigozie Obiegbu! Chigozie joined the Humanities Institute this semester because she wishes to challenge her own understanding of the construction of knowledge.
“I realized I had learned very little knowledge beyond Western thought in the humanities,” she said.
“I hope to broaden my idea of the history of thought and gain a deeper and more informed perspective on what counts as knowledge in the humanities.”
Looking ahead, Chigozie hopes to apply these new insights to her Philosophy and Linguistics majors. Go Chigozie!!

Humanities Fellow and Scripps junior Hannah Grunow has big plans for the semester. “I hope to expand my worldview through the opportunity of hearing our amazing array of professors speak and being able to discuss their ideas with both them and my fellow students and our professor, Yuval Avnur,” she said. As a French Studies major, Hannah is excited to explore the core questions of humanity beyond a Eurocentric focus in an interdisciplinary way. “Humanities Institute, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I am specifically excited about this semester’s theme “A Broader History of Thought” focusing on non-Western thought. The core questions this theme explores—“what is true, what is right, what are we, and what does it mean to know this?”—also resonate with me given the Core 3 class I recently took, Landscapes of Plunder taught by Professor Wendy Cheng.” Join the Humanities Institute for our next event, this Thursday Feb 25 on Zoom! 🌟

: Ifeona Fulani
Date: March 26
Time:12:15 pm - 1:15 pm
Venue: Hampton Room
In 1865, hundreds of peasants marched to the courthouse in Morant Bay, Jamaica, to protest the slave-like conditions, disease, and hunger brought on by a prolonged drought. Ifeona Fulani, clinical professor in the Global Liberal Studies program at New York University, reads from her work-in-progress, The First Stone, and shows how that natural disaster over 150 years ago reveals contemporary questions of precarity.
Presented in partnership with Hartley Burr Alexander Chair Annual Lecture and the Scripps College Humanities Institute
