"Everything we do at the office gets called âwork.â And thatâs a problem. Really, there are two kinds of work:
âDeep workâ is using your skills to create something of value. It takes thought, energy, time and concentration.
âShallow workâ is all the little administrative and logistical stuff: email, meetings, calls, expense reports, etc.
Shallow work stops you from getting fired â but deep work is what gets you promoted."

Arin Brahma had lots of good reasons for coming to CGU for a PhD in information systems and technology with a specialization in data science and analytics: âOne [reason] is I found subject matter that Iâm passionate about here. I searched a lot of universities, but I am passionate about learning more about data science and analyticsâand I found out Claremont offered that. That itself was great news for me. Then I found it was a very flexible program because I am also a professor myself teaching at another university, so I have to do both: I have to do full-time teaching as well as pursue my PhD. So, the flexibility of the program, the quality of the faculty, the research that goes on here, and this beautiful campusâitâs local for me, I live in IrvineâI think those are the winning factors.â

You know the nameâDruckerâbut do you know the person? This is Peter Drucker, an educator, prolific author, and management consultant who was described as the âfather of modern management.â In 1971, he helped develop the countryâs first executive MBA programs for working professionals at CGU. The Drucker School bears his name proudly and adheres to his philosophy of management as a liberal art, upholding his imperative that business organizations are accountable to society and should operate responsibly and ethically.

Who loves their humans more -- cats or dogs? Economics Prof. Dr. Paul J. Zak ran experiments for a BBC documentary that explores the question. The findings are gaining global attention, including features on the Today Show, The Huffington Post, and The Sydney Morning Herald.
Author and friend Bruce Rosenstein recapped Drucker Day on his blog. Rosenstein said the day left him with "a sense of new beginnings" at the Drucker School, and he concludes that managing and leading creative organizations is a space in which the school is "poised to thrive."

To celebrate our 90th anniversary year, our will focus on the people who contributed to our universityâs history.
This is James Blaisdell. Blaisdell, who originally came to Pomona College as a professor of biblical literature in 1910, was CGUâs founding president. He envisioned a network of small, independent collegesâwhich became know as the Claremont Collegesâthat included a graduate university. Blaisdell served as CGUâs president until 1936. His vision of a âgraduate school of the highest distinctionâ continues to shape CGU into the institution it is today.
