4th of July Celebration and CLASP's Tutors and Techies being honored as Community Heroes.
Where did the school year go? As you read this newsletter, we count down the days until CLASP ends for the 2021-22 school year. I have been rewarded by seeing growth in so many of our students, from improved reading levels to mastering math facts. They’ve worked hard on their paths to improvement with their dedicated tutors lighting the way.
Everyone’s time is valuable, especially when it comes to volunteer time, and I invite you to please consider tutoring at one of our sites.
If you love reading with a youngster or hearing about their day at school, you can make a huge difference in the life of a CUSD elementary school student by tutoring and mentoring them two days a week for an hour and one half each time. Our tutors have varied backgrounds and experiences from high school students, college students, and community volunteers. No previous teaching or tutoring experience is required!
The Volunteer Registration form can be found on the CLASP website:
https://clasp4kids.org/volunteer/application/
Tutors are urgently needed at the Wheeler Park location. Please feel free to call me at 909-204-0127. Site supervisors are there to assist newcomers, so please volunteer if you are available.
Also, you can sign up now for the 2022-2023 school year. Thank you.

KID WISDOM
What is something that you are really good at, And What is something you aren’t very good at or something you would like to learn or be better at?
Alan Jack (Former BP tutor and husband to Bev Jack) recently took on the project of refurbishing the little library at WP. The original little library was an Eagle Scout project and over the years, the elements had taken their toll. Alan reinforced the base, replaced the clear panel, the decayed wood, and the hardware. He readied the library so that Skylar Segura and Cristina Antoniolli could paint it. Tom Shelley from the city of Claremont reinstalled it to its original place on Vista Drive. Carole Lee Marshall transported books donated by the Claremont Library to stock the new Little Library. We look forward to restocking it with these books for the neighborhood children to enjoy.
As part of a cultural enrichment project, CLASP students learned about the Chinese New Year celebration. They were given red envelopes with a gold foil-wrapped chocolate coin inside to participate in the ritual of Lai-See. The red envelope and gold coin signifies the wish of good fortune for the recipient.
What a wonderful time we had this afternoon in the lovely garden of Devorah Lieberman and Roger Auerbach, Celebrating CLASP and the many people who make it possible. We honored retired Director Jan Creasey and welcomed the new Director, Cristina Antoniolli, as well as new CUSD Superintendent, Dr. Jeff Wilson. Words shared by them and CLASP President Frank D’Emilio told the story of what makes CLASP special - the staff, the volunteer tutors and the donors and supporters. With many thanks to all who made the event possible.
