- About the Course -

This course is about moving between countries and cultures. It draws on participants' personal experience. It offers contextualization, conceptualization, theorization, and evaluation of living and studying abroad, both in social-political and individual-experiential terms.

Readings of critical and literary sources (including film) from a range of social-science and humanities disciplines.

The course examines manifestations of ethnic, linguistic, gender, and power relations as perceived and lived by participants in their experience of another country and culture and provides space for analytical reflection.

Attending an info session is the first step in the study away process; before starting the study away application and meeting with an advisor. Join us to learn more!

The fall 2026 study away app deadline is approaching (Feb 8)! Students are expected to begin their app at least two weeks in advance of the deadline. If you have signed up for advising or are working on your app and have questions, you can attend the IDPO's drop-in advising hours on:
