❤️🔥✨ it was beyond joyous to accept an award from my alma mater for Outstanding Recent Alumna for my work as a Linguist and Bookstore owner ❤️🔥🎉
over the past year and a half my work with my Indigenous language has been such a fulfilling and rewarding purpose; to spend time daily in community with a shared goal to honor our ancestors beautiful language! 💖 i have seen my speaking proficiency sky rocket, i never would have thought i’d be able to sustain over an hour speaking & listening entirely in my language; i also had such confidence issues teaching and building resources but i’ve found my groove 🌸🎉
additionally working on the bookstore has been so much fun to connect with those who are passionate about reading perspectives from voices we didn’t get growing up & introducing a new generation to such a foundational experience of witnessing themselves on page! 📖✨
i am super blessed beyond comprehension for my family and community support! 🫶🏻✨ i couldnt be more grateful to get to wake up every day and do the work that i do! hakupi n čis̱k nütuhtüyi'ci ❤️🔥 @ Scripps College

🐟⛑ i am indeed, a massive steinbeck fan
his writing of the working man is mine and my dad’s favorite; he can truly capture what america’s labor evolved into in the 20th century
also his detail of california sincerely comes alive off the page, i can see the bay, the hills, and the california towns really come to fruition piece by piece
i hope to get a tattoo of his work some day, maybe the home he lived in or a type writer with his signature; he’s by far one of my favorite american authors the past year! do you have a favorite steinbeck novel?

✨ hi everyone! i’ve been mostly offline and stepping back on a lot of things because i’ve been managing a health issue with myself. i am doing a lot better, especially thanks to the help of my family! lots of doctor visits & lifestyle changes that have been having me reassess how i spend my waking hours 🌸 thanks for everyone’s patience while i manage my health & focus on returning to life with a healthier head on my shoulders!
also i’ve been thinking i’d like to share more books from non-Indigenous authors & be more of an open book review and book related account as well! i will still of course share my Native authored reads, but you know one thing about being a book nerd since i was a little kid is i’ve enjoyed so so so many books under the sun ☀️ & here is my current read, Beloved by Toni Morrison, which has been a great companion while i’m focusing on getting my health better, Toni’s writing is phenomenal, the imagery and poignancy is just wow!! i hope you are all well & much love to you and yours! 💖✨

i got to take myself on a birthday date to get this beautiful art i worked with to create! i also for the first time getting a tattoo got to read half a book 📖☺️😂 i have usually gotten my arms done years ago & never tried to read at the same time, it was a great way to keep your mind on something else to distract from the endurance/time!
thank you so much it came out so beautiful & it was so lovely to chat about astrology & art! hahaha

📖✨🎉 ARC: Kukum by Susan Ouriou, PUBLICATION: July 11, 2023 📖✨
friends i’ve been sooo so so swamped w my other full time job & getting prepared for end of quarter 1 that i haven’t even gotten to share all of my advanced reader copies from ABA winter institute!
i picked this up because i was so interested in the premise: “Kukum recounts the story of Almanda Siméon, an orphan raised by her aunt and uncle, who falls in love with a young Innu man despite their cultural differences and goes on to share her life with the Pekuakami Innu community. They accept her as one of their own: Almanda learns their language, how to live a nomadic existence, and begins to break down the barriers imposed on Indigenous women. Unfolding over the course of a century, the novel details the end of traditional ways of life for the Innu, as Almanda and her family face the loss of their land and confinement to reserves, the enduring violence of residential schools. ***Kukum intimately expresses the importance of Innu ancestral values and the need for free of nomadic peoples feel to this day.***”
i am super motivated from this book to learn more about the histories & experiences of nomadic tribal peoples & to see how the author will talk about this in today’s time of 21st north american society that requires some idea of “permanent” settlement!
