As summer comes to a close, we want to highlight one Gouldie who has been participating in a partnered internship with Temecula Valley Writers & Illustrators.

This summer, Crystal Qin interned at TVWI, helping create content for aspiring creatives. Her work contributed to a TVWI project aimed at making industry knowledge more accessible to writers.

We are so glad that Crystal was able to gain this valuable experience through our partnered internship program!

It’s time for the last faculty research spotlight of the summer!

Radhika Koul, Associate Professor of Literature, and her research assistant, Arundhati Sathish ‘29, are exploring the intersection of colonial educational policy and philological exploration in 19th-century British India through archives from the British Library and the Bodleian. Their research will culminate in “a research document with transcriptions and attendant analyses in preparation for a scholarly article examining how colonial educational policy was shaped by both bureaucratic imperatives and intellectual curiosity about indigenous knowledge systems.”

It’s our last week of recognizing our summer fellows!

This week we are highlighting Selina Liu ‘28, who is creating an oral history and film exploring the declining Fuzhounese dialect. Selina’s work will examine the importance of preserving this language and the cultural knowledge, regional identity, and family history that it holds. Interviewing elders, immigrants, and younger Fuzhounese Americans, this project will preserve voices and knowledge while directing those interested in learning to helpful resources.

It’s time to highlight another Gould Center-sponsored faculty research project!

Lynn Itagaki, Associate Professor of Literature and Gender, and her research assistant, Kryster Carmela Labarda ‘28, are working on co-editing a volume of original essays from the Gould-sponsored “The Futures of Comparative Racialization” multi-day conference held in October 2025 at CMC.

It’s the time of the week that we recognize another summer fellow!

This week we are highlighting Andrea Pua ‘27, who is in the Philippines exploring how cultural contexts, social norms, and access can impact communication of minimally verbal children with autism. Andrea is spending time with caregivers and families to understand how children communicate their needs and how their families interpret them. She aims to make sense of the challenges they face and to produce a documentary that reflects their lived experiences.

It’s time to highlight another Gould Center-sponsored faculty research project!

Nicholas Buccola, Dr. Jules L. Whitehill Professor of Humanism and Ethics, and his research assistants Asia Best ‘27 and Evelyn Montoya ’27 are working on Professor Buccola’s book, which “will be the first book-length treatment of James Baldwin’s philosophy of love and patriotism.” This summer, the trio is working on the late stages of the book and its publishing.

Only 4 days left to submit a design!

The Gould Center needs a design for our 2026-27 T-Shirt, and since we have so many creative students connected with us, we thought we would farm out the task by running a T-Shirt Design Contest.

The contest is open to CMC students only. If any of our past Gouldies who have already graduated would like to submit a design, you are most welcome to do so as well!

It’s the time of the week that we recognize another summer fellow!

This week we are highlighting Marilyn Ma ‘27, who is in London exploring mediumality in live coding. Live coding as a medium uses written code to generate music and visuals in real time. Her research will document how live coding affects musical creativity and will draw on insights from the live coding community, performances, workshops, and a VR project.

It’s time to highlight another Gould Center-sponsored faculty research project!

Gaston Espinosa, Arthur V. Stoughton Professor of Religious Studies, and his research assistant Emma Liedke ‘28 are exploring U.S. Latino and Puerto Rican history and religion by analyzing the life, work, and autobiography of Juan Leon Lugo. This summer, the pair are working towards Professor Espinosa’s biography of Juan Leon Lugo and a co-edited translation of Lugo’s autobiography. They are focusing on creating a timeline, bibliography, and index by September 2026.

It’s the time of the week that we recognize another summer fellow!

This week we are highlighting Callum Dhanda ‘27, who is in the United Kingdom investigating Black Country culture, identity, and connection to history. His research will document why the region has lost much of its cultural identity and explore how to reconnect young residents to their history.
