Today was a full day! We started in the morning at the Platte Hatchery & Weir learning all about the salmon introduction to the Great Lakes, fisheries management in the state, and the lengths our organizations take to protect these resources! Also, we got to see how the egg take process works. Thank you to Ed and the hatchery staff for taking the time to educate us!

In the afternoon we traveled up to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We headed out into the park with Ranger Dave. Students learned all about dune succession and how the land here is so different than anywhere else in MI or the region . Students analyzed different ecosystems and the story it tells about how this landscape has changed. We ventured further into the park checking out some of its most featured sites! Great day all around and some beautiful fall colors to add to it!

Thank you to Chippewa Nature Center for leading students through an insect survey of McIreland Trails. Although gross to some, students learned about the impacts of humans on habitats and how a healthy variety of insect species in our region is actually important. Thank you Belinda for leading us through the field observations!

Part 2 of Monday’s salmon release was aboard the Alliance, a 105 ft ,three masted schooner. Students sailed on Lake Michigan doing multiple stations from fish surveys to plankton inventories of the Grand Traverse Bay. This was all apart of the Inland Seas education program. Could not think of a more fitting finale for our class to experience this year! Thank you to ISEAS and the staff for making it an incredible experience!

Yesterday students were exposed to the technique and skills of fishing for Michigan steelhead. These lake run fish are a blast to fish for and even more fun to catch! Despite the high water, and thanks to the MI DNR, students hooked five, landed two and filleted one that we had a fish fry in class today! Students learned about the life cycle and anatomy of the fish, environment and impact of the Tippy Dam Recreation site and even about bat hibernaculums! Blast of a day! Thank you again for MI DNR!

Fly casting 101 today in ORE! Huge thank you to the guys from Great Lakes Council of Fly Fishers International for driving up and coaching the kids on the basics! 16 fly rods moving in a space is a lot but the students and instructors made it look flawless. Great experience to get first timers with a fly rod in their hands!
