Things got a little egg-streme in 8th-grade science class, where students designed and built egg crash model cars!
The objective of this lab was to engineer a vehicle capable of protecting an egg “passenger” during a collision with a wall. Throughout the project, students applied key concepts such as energy, acceleration, and Newton’s Laws of Motion.
Each group was provided with a basic car frame and wheels, but students selected additional materials to complete their designs and safeguard their egg.

For the fourth consecutive year, Rock Creek’s culinary classroom was transformed into a high-stakes arena of sprinkles and icing for it’s annual Cookie Decorating Contest. While every student began with the same humble sugar cookie canvas, the artistic destinations were wildly unique. A crack panel of judges—comprising steel-stomached school staff and a couple returning alumni decorating champions—weighed in on style, ex*****on, flavor, and consistency. Despite some initial jitters, the student chefs didn't hold back on the creativity (or the colorful toppings); the judges were presented everything from SpongeBob SquarePants and Stranger Things tributes to high-concept nods to "The Arts" and "Luxury Brands." History was even made when the 4th period winners secured the competition’s first-ever perfect score! While participants maintain that "everyone's a winner" when cookies are involved, the aftermath was best summed up by one judge who confessed, "After all that butter, flour, and frosting, I could use a nap!"

Fear of public speaking (glossophobia) is often cited as one of the greatest anxieties of human beings. Well, the nine members of Rock Creek Middle School’s Latino Student Union were not going to let that stop them. In fact, as nervous as they may have been to present at PCC/PSU’s 9th Annual Ethnic Studies Youth Conference, it was hardly noticeable to their middle and high school peers.
For a breakout session on Art and Justice, these Wolves shared their perspectives on the positive impact of musical artists like Selena, Bad Bunny, and Ivan Cornejo, not just on Hispanic and Latine youth in the US, but on the music industry on a global scale.
Having successfully completed their own presentation, they then engaged their peers from Baker Prairie Middle School in Canby, Portland’s Franklin High School, and Columbia River High in Vancouver on heady topics such as Education and the Civil Rights Movement, using art as a testimonial to affirm one’s cultural identity, and artistic expression as a way to combat isolation when facing the challenges of assimilation.
After a general session during lunch, our Wolves joined nearly 150 of their peers for another round of breakout sessions. It was a day of learning and community building that we hope will strengthen and encourage our Wolves to assert their rightful and unique place in the fabric of their school and our society.
