Pickaway Soil and Water Conservation District Recognizes Logan Elm Teachers for Careers of Environmental Efforts

Logan Elm School District is proud to have amazing staff members who care about our students each day. In addition to caring for our students, one Logan Elm Elementary teacher and one recently retired middle school teacher were recognized for the care they have shown our environment throughout their careers, teaching students about conservation both in and out of the classroom.

Empress Bethel and Lorrie Huysman have taken on many tasks throughout their years at Logan Elm. From building our recycling program to creating the OWLS (Outdoor Wild Learning Spaces) club, they have made a lasting mark on our students and our environment by teaching environmental consciousness.

They also started a “Morning Bird” program at Logan Elm, where they would meet with students before school to identify different bird species. They even created bird feeders from old tennis ball sleeves donated by our tennis programs!

“It’s not something we have to do; it’s something we want to do,” said Mrs. Bethel when reflecting on her many years at Logan Elm.

Deservedly so, our teachers’ efforts were noticed by our community, specifically by the Pickaway Soil and Water Conservation District (PSWCD) at its 82nd annual banquet. Both Mrs. Huysman and Mrs. Bethel were awarded certificates of recognition for their years of dedication to conservation in Pickaway County and their partnership with the PSWCD.

They were also surprised by an amazing award presented by Congressman David Taylor, the Outstanding Teacher Involvement Award.

As Mrs. Bethel spoke about her years at Logan Elm, she said the real award has been seeing students become truly involved in environmental efforts. She even recalled students seeing her years later and sharing that they had pursued college degrees in environmental science or other related fields.

Although we know the most important thing to them is our students, Logan Elm is grateful that these two educators could be recognized by our county and state for more than 25 years of teaching our children about conservation and the importance of caring for our environment.

Logan Elm High School Named Among U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools

Logan Elm Local Schools is proud to announce that our high school has been recognized by the U.S. News & World Report in its annual “Best High Schools” rankings for the second year in a row!

This year, Logan Elm ranked 4,205 out of 17,945 public high schools nationwide, putting LEHS in the top 23% in the country. In Ohio, Logan Elm ranked 171 out of 974 public high schools, placing us in the top 17%. Among Central Ohio public high schools, Logan Elm ranked 30 out of 141, putting us in the top 21%.

U.S. News & World Report considers several factors when determining its rankings, including student performance on state-required tests, graduation rates, and college and career readiness.

One area we are especially proud to see continued growth in is Logan Elm High School's College Readiness Index. Our district has worked to expand opportunities for students, including our growing number of CCP courses taught in-house by Logan Elm staff, expanded AP courses offered right here at Logan Elm, and our new CCP Lounge, all of which help prepare students for college.

“Our students' hard work, along with the hard work and support of our entire staff and families, have led to this award for the second year in a row. This is an achievement the entire Logan Elm community can be proud of,” said Bret King, Principal at LEHS, about this accomplishment.

We are grateful for our students, teachers, staff, and families for the work they put in each day to help Logan Elm continue moving forward!

This week, we’re getting to know Emily Hardin, our Middle School Intervention Specialist!

Emily has been a member of the Logan Elm family, but this year she is taking on a new role supporting our middle school students! We’re excited to have her in this position and can’t wait to see the impact she makes this year.

We have officially welcomed everyone back for the 2026-2027 school year!

The start of a new school year is one of our favorite times. It’s so fun to see the excitement from our students and staff as they look ahead to all that’s to come and everything they will learn along the way. We’re excited for another great year at Logan Elm!

We would like to thank everyone who came out for our Popsicles with Principals event yesterday!

It’s always great to see our families come together at events like this throughout the year. We appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by & and help us kick off another great school year!

It was so good to have our students back in the buildings today! They spent the day getting comfortable in their new classrooms and buildings, saying hi to past teachers while getting to know their new ones, catching up with friends they haven’t seen throughout the summer, and getting back into the school routine.

We’re excited to welcome the rest of our students tomorrow and can’t wait to see even more happy faces in our hallways!

Picture days for the district are officially scheduled! Our elementary students will have picture day on August 26, while our middle and high school students will have their pictures taken on September 4.

Check out the LEHS Marching Band schedule for this year! 🎺 These shows are always so much fun to watch, and our students put in countless hours throughout the year to prepare. Make sure you support our Band of Pride and catch one of their shows this season!

Come see the Logan Elm High School Marching Band of Pride at one of our marching band contest this year! If you have only seen the band at football games, I promise this is something that you NEED to experience! They are so fun.

This morning, we had the opportunity to recognize some very special members of the Logan Elm family for their incredible commitment to education. Staff members celebrating 30 years in education were honored with an apple, while two of our staff members received the rare Golden Apple, representing an amazing 40 years in education—congratulations to Marsha Waidelich and Dale Kraft.

We want to thank each of these staff members for their commitment to education and to our students. Thirty and forty years is an incredible accomplishment, and it represents so much more than a number. It means showing up year after year, continuing to give your best even on the hard days, building relationships, supporting your coworkers, and making a difference in the lives of many, many students.

We are incredibly grateful for the time and heart they have brought to Logan Elm throughout the years.
