Let's talk about friends. There is this understood expectation that siblings cannot be best friends. Additionally, there is an undercurrent in the public schools that emits the message that parents are the enemy. Homeschoolers are an anomaly to this phenomenon. Growing up, my brother, sister, and I were super close (that is also 2.5 years between my brother and I with a sister between us). We had the same friends. This was also true of the other homeschool families we grew up with - even the ones that the age gap was much larger than in our families.
But, the most important lesson I learned is that my parents are an ally. Now, when I was in college, I did get bit by the bug that my parents are the enemy. That was because of the influence of a couple of my new friends. Now, as an adult, I talk to my mom almost every day. She is definitely one of my good friends.
What can you do to help your family have this mentality?
1. Teach your family to work together.
2. Do not allow siblings to put down each other or parents.
3. Foster open communication between you and your children.
4. Teach your children how to handle themselves when they disagree with your decisions.
5. Teach your children how to negotiate with siblings.
6. Teach your children how to argue/debate in a way that fosters a healthy relationship rather than tearing apart the relationship.
7. Teach your children to be fiercely protective of their siblings.
8. Teach your children to respect you, their parents, and each other.
This is not fool-proof. There is no guarantee that your children will be the closest-knit siblings in the world. But, you are setting the stage for this to happen.
