Hey Geometry Students, have you invested in a good compass for this year? As an engineer who learned to draft by hand in college, I really do appreciate a quality compass and as a teacher, I found that they are so much more enjoyable for students to use. A compass that features an adjustable center wheel will be much easier to use because it won't constantly change its radius while you are drawing.

When students use compasses to do constructions, they are getting to experience the principles behind the theorems. Another way to do constructions is by folding "patty paper", which is actually squares of waxed paper used by delicatessens. Perhaps your student will use both.

Here's a video which is a little geeky but I loved it because it's someone in the drafting industry demonstrating how to use the tools. Not all math teachers have actually used the tools outside the geometry classroom.

A quick review of adding/subtracting integers: Most students were introduced to adding and subtracting integers using a number line. Then some of them might have started to generalize that as a rule about the size of the numbers.

When in doubt, always go back to the number line. It is the best way to SEE what is happening and figure it out. This picture is a review of what a lot of students learned in their junior high math classes, and to me, it never gets old. I've used it in class during lessons in Algebra I and Algebra II because there is always someone who needs the quick review of "bunny hops."

I hope your math student gets a chance to use the Desmos app or website this year. It is a powerful tool and eliminates the need to own a graphing calculator for homework assignments (it still can't be used for statewide exams or SAT). As a teacher, I found that my classes enjoyed many of the classroom activities that the company has written for classrooms. Should you buy a graphing calculator for your student? In Katy ISD, each high school math teacher will have a set of TI nspire CX calculators.
