โ›ˆ๏ธ Thunderstorms can be especially overwhelming for children with autism. The loud thunder, bright flashes of lightning, changes in air pressure, and disruption to routines can all lead to increased anxiety or sensory overload.

If storms are in the forecast, here are a few ways to help your child feel safe and supported:

๐Ÿ’™ Let them know a storm is coming before it arrives so they have time to prepare.
๐ŸŽง Offer noise-canceling headphones or let them wear their favorite comfort items.
๐Ÿ  Create a cozy, calming space with blankets, pillows, dim lighting, or sensory tools.
๐Ÿ“ฑ Use visual schedules or social stories to explain what thunderstorms are and reassure them that they will pass.
๐ŸŒˆ Practice calming strategies together, such as deep breathing, fidget toys, or listening to calming music.
โค๏ธ Most importantly, stay calm yourself. Your reassurance and steady presence can help your child feel more secure.

Every child experiences storms differently, and thatโ€™s okay. What helps one child may not help another. The key is finding what makes your child feel safe, understood, and supported.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What strategies have worked for your family during thunderstorms? Share your tips in the comments, you never know who you might help today.
