Congratulations to the two winning teams from this year’s Magnified Giving program, as voted on by their classmates along with Elder’s faculty and staff. Magnified Giving is a Cincinnati-based organization that teaches students the value of philanthropy through service-learning and charitable giving.

Team One chose Cancer Free Kids, hoping to raise awareness and support for pediatric cancer research. Pictured (L to R): Nathan Hoemelle, MJ Lucs, Hayden Gorczyca, Nick Fettig, Hunter Garvey, and Max Wernke.

Team Two selected Sophie’s Angel Run after being inspired by Sophie’s story and a personal connection to the foundation. Pictured (L to R): Max Holthaus, Caleb McComas, Enzo Gambetta, Connor McCarthy, Jackson Caffeo, Marquise Williams.

We are proud of these students for using their voices, creativity, and compassion to shine a light on causes bigger than themselves. Another great example of Elder students leading with purpose and making an impact beyond the classroom.

Success starts long before students submit a college application. While college essay writing is introduced during the junior year English curriculum, many Elder students choose to continue sharpening their skills this summer through our College Essay Workshop. Led by Elder English teachers Mr. Alig, Mr. Grimm, and Mr. Weinheimer, the workshop gives students a more focused, personal approach to one of the most important parts of the college application process. When motivated students meet dedicated teachers, great things happen.

Now that summer has officially begun and many of our students and recent graduates are starting summer jobs, internships, and first paychecks, it’s a great time to remember some of the advice shared in Personal Finance class this spring.

Bob Donelan, a retired Fidelity Investments executive, helped Elder Personal Finance students finish the school year strong by sharing his expertise in investing and long-term financial planning. He walked students through calculating net worth, understanding how much they may need in retirement to maintain their lifestyle, and why starting early matters.

Students also learned about brokerage accounts, IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401(k)s, and investment options including mutual funds and ETFs. Valuable lessons that can make a real impact long after graduation.

Spanish III students visited Veracruz Mexican Grill in Price Hill to practice conversational Spanish in a real-world setting. After placing their orders, the students toured the restaurant’s bakery and market where staff described the regional foods, cooking methods and panaderia items in Spanish. Some students joined in shaping the pan dulce, a traditional sweet bread.
