CATS is a non-profit organization that harnesses the transformational power of the arts to positively impact the lives of students.
Students earn elective credits enabling them to graduate from high school and, in the process, gain valuable life skills. The Cincinnati Arts & Technology Studios (CATS) works with Cincinnati Public Schools high school students, many of them with the least likelihood of graduating, and we help them graduate at a rate of more than 90%, year after year. We do so using arts-experiences, workforce tra

The decision to use Zaha Hadid as the architect for the CAC's downtown building kept with the CAC’s history of promoting emerging or undiscovered contemporary artists. Although Hadid had already been the subject of adulation, study and controversy, and international critical acclaim, she had only completed three freestanding buildings during her career. As a largely untested architect, a woman, and an Arab Muslim, Hadid had not found the construction world easy to enter. Our renowned building is Hadid’s first American building, and is the first American museum building designed by a woman.

Dear Students,
As an agency born after the 2001 police killing of Timothy Thomas in Cincinnati which spawned similar protests, CATS feels the weight of the most recent acts of police brutality against people of color on top of the current health crisis. We feel your outrage, anger and pain because we feel the same way! But we also believe that this is an opportunity to change our country for the better and you are an important part of the solution!
This is a call to action, to be part of history, to be a change-maker. We have always said that the skills you learn at CATS are transferrable to all aspects of life. Designers are problem solvers, in the words of Tyson Betts, Design Director at Procter & Gamble and Board Chair at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Remember this Design Thinking visual in your CATS studio (pictured below)?
This is the moment to truly come together, all of us; black, brown, white, and all shades in between. This is the moment for us all to be thoughtful critical thinkers and problem solvers. We know what the problem is, we can define it and we have empathy for it.
Now it’s time to ideate, to create a prototype that demonstrates your voice on this problem and to test it in the broader community. Create art, create a social media campaign, or find other creative ways to lend your support safely. While our actions may seem small within the enormity of widespread racism, collectively we have the potential to affect change. Young people blaze new trails that can change our world in extraordinary ways!
Remember, as always, CATS will be a safe haven for you. Though we are not physically together we are with you. We believe in you and the power you have to cause much-needed change in a desperate nation. We hope you will lend your voice to the chorus that has risen to affect our history in a positive way.
Create art; place it in the comments section of our page underneath this letter to you.
We can’t wait to see and share yet another powerful expression from each of you who are willing to act!
In solidarity,
The CATS Staff

These are troubling times! The events of the past couple weeks have highlighted racial inequalities and egregious violent acts against African American citizens. These events serve to remind us that our country is infected not only with Corona Virus but also infected with the cancer of racism. WE must individually and collectively stand against these racial injustices and constructively confront the poisonous ideologies that threaten our communities of color.
America has stood at this crossroad too many times before, it is my hope, that as a nation, we can find a path forward that will bring lasting and substantive change.
