Just like the asters and goldenrod growing side-by-side in our outdoor classroom, our preschoolers are learning that we are all deeply connected to the world around us. Our asters and goldenrod bloom in October.
Throughout the school year, we visit the forest—in the bright sun of the summer, enjoy the crisp autumn wind, and the quiet winter freeze and then watch it all wake back up in the spring.
By slowing down and following the children's lead, we aren't just teaching them about nature, we are learning to live in relationship with it. As they navigate friendships during uninterrupted play, watch bees gather pollen, or look closely at an intricate spider web, they are learning to know this land intimately.

Today was a perfect Monday. When I was driving my teen daughter to the bus stop this morning she asked me what I was excited for today. And my thought was a new circle, the perfect weather, seeing my friends. I love my job.
Our new morning circle is the most challenging one of the year so far. When we created it we knew we would be spending a lot of time hiking this month and wanted one we could do in the forest. To keep our circle moving smoothly, the children have to focus on shared spatial awareness and reading each other's physical boundaries. It’s a real challenge to practice the impulse control needed to move together as a community without pulling their neighbors off balance. All while on uneven surfaces!

We celebrated a sweet 5 year old’s birthday today!
Her friends were so excited to celebrate her that before she even arrived this morning, they were already busy making cards for her. I love watching the genuine excitement and care the children have for one another.
After our birthday celebrations, we spent the rest of the morning enjoying some beautiful free play together.
A day well spent.

As our days grow shorter and the chill of autumn wind blows in, we are leaning into the rhythm of the new season. Today we enjoyed a Michaelmas puppet play. To remind us of courage, strength, kindness and inner warmth.
This season can be a time to gather our own "inner light" to carry us through the darker winter months. We are practicing being brave like knights, standing tall, and helping one another.

Yesterday I found a discarded spider exoskeleton. I was excited to share my find with all my friends today. Finding things in nature, our classroom, is the absolute best way to learn. It was the perfect hands on lesson while we waited for our morning snack.

The natural environment meets every child where they are, challenging them physically and socially to push themselves and to help their friends, too. Curriculum writes itself in and opportunities for learning, physical growth and social development occur organically and holistically.
