Gun violence is not a trend ‼️

But yet, young people, especially black males, fall into the trap. It is an uneducated conscious decision sometimes made due to fear.

That’s the purpose behind our Project E.P.I.C. (Endless Possibilities Influencing Change). We hope to reduce gun violence by addressing the root cause. By providing a sense of leadership and mentorship early on, we’ve made great impact.

Our male cohort in Feb. 2026 noticed a drastic change. In the beginning, a baseline of 71.7% were charged with engaging in violent activities or crimes. By the end, a reduction was made to 16.7%. While it’s not zero (yet), we take pride in doing what we can to show these young men a life that is beyond bars.

Congratulations to our Former Mentee Erica for graduating! 🎓

Erica joined our mentoring program in October 2020 searching for guidance on academics, social skills, not easily being influenced by others, and overall having a positive female presence outside the home.

Mentor Dalena was able to be there for her every step of the way. She supported Erica for 4 years before Erica felt comfortable enough to spread her own wings and fly. She received a note from Erica: “Erica actually thanked me for being her mentor and said that all that I did for her over the years worked! That surprised me. It felt good to hear.”

We are so proud that Erica finished out the program in February 2025! She is only one of many stories that have been impacted by our mentorship.

Today, Dalena continues to provide mentorship to our youth - including Erica’s younger sister!

Freedom is never free. This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We believe the best way to honor their legacy is by building a brighter future. By becoming a mentor, you can guide a young person in our community to reach their full potential and live a life of purpose. Honor our heroes by investing in our youth today. 🌟🇺🇸

Guiding Light Mentoring is proud to announce its participation in the campaign.

Jack.org is offering a course that can help you recognize the signs of struggle, start the conversation, and understand how to give practical support.

Through May 31st, community members can get their Be There certificate — for every person that does so, Guiding Light Mentoring earns $25 in donation from the Born This Way Foundation and Interact with Health. Donations can go up to a total of $2,500!
