MSJ Art and Design The Department of Art & Design provides degrees in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Art Education and Art The Departments of Art and Design. Art majors at Mount St.

Joseph University discover a wealth of opportunities to explore and develop their artistic abilities. Students who successfully complete the art, art education or fine arts majors:

Engage in the creative art making process, using imagery, structures and media, to express and communicate ideas, feelings and experiences. Identify the formal, technical and expressive aspects in visual artworks. Understand and appreciate the historical, social and cultural contexts of the art and artists in past and present societies. Students work in our facilities, including the newly renovated Dorothy Meyer Ziv Art and Design Building, and the Studio San Giuseppe Art Gallery. We offer art scholarships to freshmen based on the artistic potential demonstrated in their portfolios. We offer majors in art, art education, art history and fine arts. We offer minors in art, art history, and photography. Graphic design majors combine form and content to communicate ideas to a variety of audiences. Graphic Design majors at the College of Mount St. Joseph can explore new techniques and develop the ability to communicate ideas into images in a highly artistic environment. This career-oriented program familiarizes students with the field of graphic design and its application to visual communication. The program also offers opportunities to study new technologies in the field. Words and images are organized using a unique blend of traditional methods and new technologies. Students can explore cooperative education options in their concentrations. All Graphic Design majors are eligible to study abroad through our partnership with Richmond University in London, England.

Art, History & German Connections at Union Terminal! 

MSJ Art & Design students recently stepped outside the classroom and into Cincinnati history during a field trip to the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal!

Students explored the iconic mosaic murals of German-born artist Winold Reiss, learning about his artistic process, Cincinnati’s history, and the German artistic influences that shaped his work. Reiss created 23 mosaic murals for Union Terminal, featuring Cincinnati’s workers, industries, transportation, technology, and cultural history in incredible detail, color, and craftsmanship.

The German connection continued with a meal at Hofbräuhaus Newport, where students enjoyed German food and culture while reflecting on the day’s discoveries.

Students in Pre-Thesis are tasked with leading reading discussions on chapters of Rick Rubin “The Creative Act” book each Monday morning. We usually head outside if the weather is nice. Our Senior Design Seminar students showcased their proposed topics for their final Graphic Design capstone projects to Prof. Chopra and Prof. Grannan!

It was exciting to hear their ideas begin to take shape and see the direction each student is considering. The professors were thrilled by the range of concepts and offered feedback to help students refine, strengthen, and push their ideas further.

We can’t wait to see how these projects evolve throughout the year and what our seniors ultimately create for their final exhibition. So much creativity ahead!

What an incredible afternoon celebrating the art, storytelling, and legacy behind one of Cincinnati’s most beloved figures.

Hall of Famer Marty Brennaman and renowned sculptor Tom Tsuchiya, MSJ Adjunct in the Department of Creative Arts, took attendees behind the scenes of the creation of Marty’s statue on Saturday, September 19, at the Jeff Wyler Family Hall of Fame Theater.

The conversation offered a fascinating look at the artistic process, from the initial concept to the finished sculpture, along with the stories that helped bring the project to life.

Guests also received an autographed mini-poster signed by Marty and Tom and had the opportunity to take photos with them in front of Marty’s statue.

A wonderful afternoon filled with art, history, baseball, storytelling, and two special Cincinnati personalities. A great celebration of the creativity that helps bring our community’s stories to life.

Prof. Swati Chopra’s course, Design Thinking, AI, and the Future of Innovation, had its first round of student presentations!
Students presented their initial concepts focused on improving the MSJ student experience, sharing ideas around real campus needs, student support, connection, belonging, and innovation.
A huge thank you to our wonderful panel of critics, Joe Shadle, Kate Mitchell, Alex Grant, and Chris Sweeney, for joining us, listening so thoughtfully, and offering such valuable insights. The panel was impressed by the students’ ideas and helped guide them with feedback on how to make their projects even stronger.
We cannot wait to see what our brilliant students develop next!
