As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, so do the ethical questions surrounding it.

Researchers in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences are examining questions of trust, harm and fairness — and what it means to rely on AI in areas like education, business and everyday life.

Through UC’s Center for Humanities and Technology and other interdisciplinary work, A&S researchers are taking a critical look at the implications of AI and emerging technologies.

“We're focusing on questions about trust in AI, harm in AI,” postdoctoral fellow Clair Baleshta told Spectrum News.

The UC Philosophy department is excited to welcome a host of new PhD students, post-docs, and faculty to Cincinnati this fall. Keep reading to see how UC is expanding its strengths, particularly in ethics, civil discourse, and philosophy of education.

(Top Left) Clair Baleshta is an incoming Postdoctoral Fellow in AI Ethics at UC’s Center for Humanities and Technology (CHaT). Her research explores AI harm, trust in AI, and the role of AI in education. Her broader areas of interest include feminist philosophy, bioethics, and the philosophy of harm reduction.

(Top Right) Dr Mia Levenson is the Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Public Engagement of Science at the University of Cincinnati. Her research examines how popular performance constructed and circulated biomedical knowledge in the 19th and early 20th century United States.

(Bottom Left) Dr. Dan Dake is joining us as a Visiting Assistant Professor. His research concerns virtue and the ethical significance of attention, wonder, and dialogue, which informs his dissertation on humility and his effort to quicken students by the ecstatic, question-asking spirit of the Platonic dialogues.

(Bottom Right) Dr. Cassie Finley has newly joined our faculty. Her work in philosophy centers on how moral and intellectual virtues inform, and can be cultivated through, dialogue – particularly in education, P4C, civil discourse, and online contexts.
