It was 77 years ago today when Hank Williams did his first of two sessions at 811 Race Street, Floor 2 - Herzog in Cincinnati. 17 years ago tonight there was a jam session in the space with Jake Speed and The Freddies and David Rhodes Brown on steel guitar as a house band… as musicians mixed in and the intention to raise a historic marker and lay claim on Cincinnati’s legacy with Hank Williams was announced. Who knew the journey in the space and the modern Herzog era would birth so much since. If you haven’t checked out the latest, go stream Buffalo Wabs & The Price Hill Hustle and The Tillers take on all the songs Hank did at those historic Herzog sessions. Produced by Charles Alley. Better yet, pick up the LP. Cheers!

This year’s Arnold’s x Maker’s Mark annual Black Friday record might just be our most special yet!
Just two blocks from our front door sits the old Herzog Studio, where Hank Williams recorded eight songs over two legendary sessions — some of his biggest hits. We teamed up with Neltner Small Batch Records and the Cincinnati Music Heritage Foundation, rented out that same historic space, and had The Tillers and Buffalo Wabs & The Price Hill Hustle re-record every one of those Hank songs in the exact same room. A split vinyl album with 4 songs from each band.
The album — “Race Street Revival: The Herzog Sessions” — will be released Black Friday, November 28, on all streaming platforms and as a limited-edition sea-glass splatter vinyl, available exclusively at almost every single local record store. Printing by Otto Printing.
And because we never do things halfway, we’re celebrating with two release shows at Arnold’s:
🦃 Thanksgiving Eve 11/26/24 : The Tillers
🎸 Black Friday 11/28/25: Buffalo Wabs & The Price Hill Hustle
At each show, our friends at Maker’s Mark will be giving away 100 free Maker’s Red Vinyl albums to the first 100 people through the door.
This entire project was made possible by Maker’s Mark — helping keep the spirit of music, craftsmanship, and community alive right here in Cincinnati.

Proud to share newest release of the modern Herzog era… and release parties… thanks to Chris Breeden of Arnold's Bar and Grill, Charles Alley, The Tillers, Buffalo Wabs & Price Hill Hustle, Neltner Small Batch and more. Honored to get to do the liner notes for this amazing record and talk further on the intersection of the modern and historic eras of Herzog - Elliott Ruther

Latest homage and engagement with Historic Herzog and its unique Hank Williams history… for a modern day Herzog release…
Every year about this time we're working with Arnold's Bar and Grill, Otto Printing, Musicol and some crazy talented musicians from our region. I couldn't let the opportunity pass by without posting a little teaser for this year's very unique Maker's Mark release.
More to come.

Jimmy D is truly a shining star of our music scene in more ways to count than most. And what a great guy. It was always an honor to have him at Herzog, be it with events involving The Jockey Club community and more, let alone his leadership with Herzog Music. In archives we do have items Jim donated before he moved, including an interview with him to make available. Nelson Slater will be missed. On behalf of CMHF, it was always great to exchange with Nelson at Herzog or in Northside or on Ludlow Ave. Not sure where to begin on all his prolific musical output. Personally I am glad that I told him I picked up one of his 45s at Shake It, running into him at The Proud Rooster about 2 mos ago. Here’s an experimental session he did with Billy Catfish at Herzog. Peace to you and yours Nelson. - Elliott Ruther

The "Pre-Nashville A Team" at Cincinnati's Herzog Studios - Zero to 180 - Three Minute Magic
The Pleasant Valley Boys were considered country music’s first “A Team” of session players, whose services were highly sought by two of the top country artists in Nashville between 1947 and 1948 at the very dawn of that city’s ascendance as one of the world’s great recording capitals. When...
