The United States has reached its highest annual measles case count in 35 years, with 2,295 confirmed cases reported by late July 2026. According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the total has already surpassed the entire 2025 count and marks the highest number of infections recorded since 1991, despite several months remaining in the year.

Public health experts say the rapid rise reflects the impact of several large outbreaks that spread through multiple states earlier in the year. South Carolina and Utah have been among the hardest-hit areas, contributing significantly to the national total. Because measles spreads very easily through the air, even small gaps in vaccination coverage can allow outbreaks to expand quickly.

Health officials are also concerned that continued transmission could put the country's measles-elimination status at risk. The United States achieved that milestone in 2000 after years of successful vaccination efforts. Experts note that maintaining high immunization coverage remains one of the most effective ways to limit outbreaks and protect communities.

Researchers and public health agencies are closely monitoring the situation as schools reopen and communities work to prevent additional spread during the remainder of 2026.
