This week’s Student Spotlight is Maria Monfreda!

What is the most valuable thing you have gained from your experience in the program so far?
“One of the most valuable things media production has taught me is how to work well with others and be a good leader. Media production focuses a lot on group projects and collaboration. I have learned so many skills in communication and preparation that I will take with me post-grad.”

What project, experience, or accomplishment are you most proud of during your time in the program?
“I am most proud of my role as host of Cincy Sparks. Cincy Sparks is a dating show that my 5 best friends and I started freshman year through Bearcast. It has helped me really develop my love for interviewing and being on camera. It has been so rewarding to watch how the show has grown over the years. I have loved watching how much of a community it has fostered through media production and UC as a whole.”

What are your career goals or aspirations after graduation?
“After graduation I would love to work in the social media marketing space, ideally in the entertainment industry.”

Joe Pucella is an MPRO junior on the Film and Television track with a minor in Finance. He has a certificate in Directing and specializes in editing. He plans to be a film and television or theatre director!

Over the summer, Joe interned with Schoolyard Studios, which is a media production company in Burton, OH that provides studio space for various productions. Joe worked as a Creative Production and Marketing Intern where every day was different. He filmed for advertisements, made pitch decks, edited commercial content, created and organized the equipment storage office, and even stood in as an actor!

Joe’s biggest takeaway from the experience is that there is always some work or project to do! This internship has helped him network and establish credibility with others in the field. His favorite part about the internship was working with established professionals in their field to see how they manage and accomplish the work.

Joe’s biggest piece of advice is always be open to change and welcome adversity with every aspect.

This week’s MPRO Internship Highlight is Ella Sander! Ella is pursuing a double major in Media Production (Multimedia track) and Public Relations. She hopes to work in media marketing and creative videography within the sports or entertainment industry.

Recently, Ella interned in Cincinnati, Ohio with Bearcats Digital as a Creative Video Intern, collaborating with other interns and staff to create high-quality videos that support the initiatives of the individual teams. She captured and edited the game and event recaps, hype reels, interviews, and a variety of other pieces.

Ella’s favorite part of this experience was the talented people she met and had the privilege of working with. She was inspired every day by the creativity and passion that they bring. She believes industry is in amazing hands with this new generation of creatives.

Her biggest takeaway is to take risks. After applying for her second semester of Junior year, she can confidently say it’s been one of her favorite parts of college thus far. She’s been able to travel with the teams, create strong portfolio pieces, and even meet connections from industry professionals.

Ella’s advice would be to believe in yourself! You never know where your passions will lead you if you don’t try and say yes to everything. Be genuine. The rest will follow. People want to work with kind, hard working, and talented individuals. The industry is smaller than you think!

Keep up the great work, Ella!

A few weeks ago, a group of Media Production students had the opportunity to work various positions at the Cincinnati Open! Here's an overview from two of our students...

Cameran Cook (Film/TV track) worked as a Production Assistant for Cincinnati Open’s production team, which controls everything on the view board, seat upgrades/giveaways, player walk-ons, coin tosses and more. Cameran helped in making cue cards for the hosts, controlling one of the LED boards in the player tunnel, and assisted the Center Court stage manager. Her favorite part of the experience was meeting professionals in the industry and learning what they do. They were all very helpful and made her feel welcomed to the team!

Larson Sutula (Sports Media track) returned as a Production Assistant for the Tennis Channel at the Cincinnati Open. Throughout the tournament, Larson helped the production team and staff with daily tasks, set up and broke down sets, and worked closely with tennis analysts, announcers, and talent. His favorite part of the experience was having the opportunity to work alongside so many talented professionals in the broadcasting industry. Being able to learn from them and see everything that goes into producing a show like that was truly inspiring and made him even more excited to pursue a career in the field. On top of that, being surrounded by so many influential names in the tennis world made the experience even better, especially as a lifelong tennis fan!

Way to go Cameran and Larson! Stay tuned for more student success from the Cincinnati Open...

The next student in our MPRO Internship Highlight Series is Laney Walden! Laney is a senior on the Film and TV track, hoping to be a Creative Director in the music industry.

This past summer, Laney interned with Vevo in New York City, working with the “Original Content” team as a Production & Editorial Intern. During her time, she assisted with producer tasks, sat in on various meetings, and worked with artists on set.

Laney’s favorite part of working with Vevo was getting to shadow the directors on set. They welcomed any questions and gave her the opportunity to observe their different creative perspectives up close-- which is a rare opportunity.

Overall, her biggest takeaway from this experience is that there’s so much to learn from every department, role on set, and industry. Even if you don't think you want to work in a certain job position, stay curious and get to know everyone. She has learned a lot about adaptability and collaboration from working in a creative department and also a more corporate environment. Experiencing both environments over the course of one summer challenged her, but she wouldn't have it any other way.

Laney’s best advice for others is to stalk those credits and send those cold emails! Introduce yourself to everyone and go in with a curious and open mind. Lastly, people like working with good people.

Congratulations, Laney, on this incredible internship opportunity, and keep up the great work!

Welcome back to our Student Spotlight series! Meet Griffin Tierney, our first spotlight of this school year!

What is the most valuable thing you have gained from your experience in the program so far?
“The most valuable thing I have gained from the program are the connections that I have made. There are so many projects going on throughout each semester that there are always friends looking for help. I also love being able to help out the people around me in the areas they are passionate about. Media Production is such a collaborative place that the connections you make can really build the experience you are looking for.”

What project, experience, or accomplishment are you most proud of during your time in the program?
“The experience that I am most proud of in the program is getting the chance to help out on Film Lab as someone who wasn't a part of taking the class. I got the chance to PA on Film Lab, helped out on set everyday, and worked preparing for the following production days. I am most proud of that experience because of the effort I put in towards helping, the incredible people I met, and the many opportunities I was given through that experience.”

What are your career goals or aspirations after graduation?
“My biggest goals after graduation are to go into Producing and Assistant Directing for television. Another aspiration I have is to get into documentary filmmaking, centered around conservation and animal science.”
