The UC DPT program was well represented at the annual Brain Injury Alliance of Northern Kentucky Conference! Dr. Amu De Silva presented “What’s Left in Right Brain Injury,” bringing together neuroscience, rehabilitation, and clinical practice, while also sharing the stage with third-year students, Teresa Schnell and Isaac Turner, who had the opportunity to contribute to the presentation and gain conference experience. Special shoutout to alumni, Walker Engelhard, for supporting our current students and staff for their presentation. We love seeing the mentorship between current and past students with our staff at events like these!

This past weekend, Dr. Melinda Ferguson and Dr. Audrey Johnson presented at the annual KPTA Conference. They presented on the new Acute Care Outcome Measure set which provides evidence-based recommendations for selecting and using standardized outcome measures to assess physical function in adults receiving physical therapy services in the hospital setting. There are several goals of the guideline which includes: promoting consistency in outcome measurement across acute care practice, supporting clinical decision-making and goal setting, enhancing communication among clinicians, patients, and health care teams, and improving the quality and comparability of outcomes data across settings and populations. We are so grateful to have dedicated clinicians representing our program at this level and demonstrating the value of our profession in the hospital environment!

This past weekend, third year student Daniel Arimi presented at the KPTA Conference with guidance from Dr. Chalee Engelhard, Dr. Amber Boyd, and Dr. Katie Torbeck through his special topics course. Read from him below!

“I had a great experience at the Kentucky APTA Annual Conference presenting on Competency Based Education. This research was done with my classmate Olivia Matthews in our Special Topics class with the guidance of Amber Boyd, Chalee Engelhard, and Katie Torbeck. I found this to be a learning opportunity by learning more about CBE and what implications it could have on physical therapy programs nationally as well as being able to educate others who weren’t aware of this style of learning. It was fun to present and have conversations with people about this topic hearing their thoughts, and I am grateful that I was able to represent the University of Cincinnati DPT program!”

3rd year student Kaleigh Dixon was recently featured by the APTA Pelvic Health Academy. This article reflects on her experience receiving the NABPT CAPP Pelvic Health Scholarship and completing the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy’s Level 1 course. Read more from Kaleigh below!

“I wrote about how the experience strengthened my interest in pelvic health and allowed me to begin translating what I had learned in the classroom into hands-on clinical skills. Pelvic health is especially meaningful to me because these conditions can have such a significant impact on a person’s confidence, independence, and quality of life, yet they are often normalized or simply not talked about. As a Black woman entering the physical therapy profession, I am also passionate about increasing representation within specialized areas like pelvic health and helping more patients see themselves reflected in the clinicians who care for them. This experience gave me more than additional clinical training; it gave me a clearer sense of direction for the kind of physical therapist I hope to become. I’m excited to continue building on that foundation during my final clinical rotation in pelvic health and outpatient orthopedics. I’m incredibly grateful to NABPT and the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy for the opportunity and excited that the article is being shared!”

Natalie Maver, a current 3rd year DPT student, has had the opportunity this summer to have her clinical rotation with MLS team FC Cincinnati! In this setting she was exposed to the unique patient population of professional soccer players and learned alongside an entire rehab team! Read about her experiences below!

“This clinical rotation has been an incredible experience, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn in a professional sports environment. I have learned so much from the entire rehab team, and I am especially thankful to my CI, Dr. Erin Morton, for her mentorship, guidance, and support throughout this rotation. Working alongside such a collaborative team has further strengthened my passion for sports physical therapy, and I am thankful to everyone who made this experience so rewarding. Go FC Cincinnati!”

3rd year student, Hannah Jenkins, has been in the NovaCare UC Training Room this summer! Read about her experience below!

“My clinical experience has been exceptionally fulfilling. I gained valuable insights into evaluating, treating, and designing programs for student athletes and professional dancers. This facility offers an extensive selection of specialized equipment for treatment and testing, including agility training gear, VALD systems, aquatic therapy, anti-gravity treadmills, high-level laser therapy, and shockwave therapy. Working alongside other physical therapy students provided an opportunity to collaborate on treatments and learn from their perspectives. A unique highlight of this rotation was participating in professional dissection sessions for the Gross Anatomy curriculum, which allowed me to sharpen my anatomical and dissection skills while directly applying this knowledge in a clinical setting. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work closely with the patient populations I aspire to serve in my future career!”
