Smith-Green Community Schools' Families:
As you have heard, and have likely seen in the news and on social media, beginning July 1st with the 2026–27 school year, all Indiana schools are required to follow Indiana SEA 78, which prohibits student use of personal wireless devices from bell to bell during the school day.
At Smith-Green Community Schools, all personal devices (including cell phones, smart watches, gaming devices, non-school-issued tablets/laptops, Meta glasses, and other wireless devices) must be stored in students' lockers throughout the school day (8:10 am- 3:10 pm).
This new state law is designed to:
Reduce distractions during instruction and learning.
Support student well-being, focus, and healthy brain development.
Last year, we began talking with students about expectations, as this is not a completely new policy. Students have done a good job keeping their phones off and away, and we are certain they will continue to do well with following the rules of keeping them in their lockers. We will review this updated law with students when school begins.
If you need to get a hold of your student, please know you can contact the main offices.
As always, we appreciate your support as we implement this new state requirement and continue to provide the best possible learning environment for our students.
