In-School Student Flu Vaccine Clinics Coming Soon!

Hawkins County Schools is partnering with the Hawkins County Health Department to offer convenient, in-school flu vaccine clinics during the school day for students!

Monday, Sept 28: MCES, CVES, SCES, MES
Tuesday, Sept 29: SES, SMS, JRP, CHS
Wednesday, Sept 30: CHES, VHS, BGS, HES
Thursday, Oct 1: CHMS, RMS, Pathways, Clinch

Second Dose Schedule: Wednesday, Nov 4: All necessary locations (Required for students receiving the flu vaccine for the first time).

Out of an abundance of caution, Church Hill Elementary School will be closed tomorrow, August 14, 2026.

This was a not a school site issue. Numerous calls of gas smells were reported to 911 and local utilities from throughout the Church Hill community starting around 8:00 am and covering areas from the Deerfield community to the Church Hill/Mt. Carmel city line.

Please note the following details and updates.
School and district personnel did exactly what they were supposed to in the event of a gas leak or poor air quality outside a school structure. They brought everyone inside and stopped the outside airflow while the problem was investigated. Our nursing supervisor and additional support were brought into the school.
Three air quality checks performed today, August 13, via the gas company, fire department professionals, and district personnel, have all come back clean, with no concerns.
A fourth air quality check will be performed Friday morning, and the site will be checked several additional times prior to Monday, August 17.
All affected school personnel who were transported to local hospitals have been released.

Thank you to our emergency services personnel (including those from Kingsport), our gas company representatives, and to our site and system personnel for their quick action in ensuring our students and staff were safe during this incident. If we receive additional details regarding the source of this smell and resulting actions, we will provide updates via this format.

CHURCH HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UPDATE

At drop off time this morning, just prior to school starting, CHES students and staff noticed a gas smell in the outside air. Emergency services and the gas company were immediately called. Several adults who had spent longer periods of time outside, began to feel nauseous. Students and staff were kept indoors and our nursing supervisor and several nurses were called in to assist. Once an inspection took place, it was determined to not be a gas leak but rather a sewer gas leak off site. It was decided to release students early out of an abundance of precaution, directly from the school site. There have been several adult staff exhibiting minor nausea and other symptoms taken to local hospitals to be monitored. One student has also been transported with similar symptoms.
