United for Veterans

United for Veterans Understanding the need, UWNEMN recruited Wilder Research to help determine the most critical issues that were within UWNEMN's scope to focus on.

United for Veterans is operated by United Way of NE MN with support from a committee of local veterans to fill gaps in services for veterans and service members across the Iron Range, Koochiching County, and Lake of the Woods County. Over the years, veterans and their family members have expressed the critical need for expanded, wrap-around services throughout our rural Iron Range communities to U

nited Way of Northeastern MN staff, board and volunteers. Upon completion of a year long study, a group comprised of local veterans was created to facilitate movement and change around the issues that were deemed most critical. "United for Veterans" raises awareness and funds through Rampage at the Ridge each year in August. Funds raised are directed towards local veterans through a variety of ways. Benefits You Should Know: DIC Survivor Benefits
When a service member or Veteran passes away, families may not know what benefits they should ask about.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, often called DIC, is a tax-free monthly VA benefit that may be available to eligible survivors.

A few things to know:
• DIC may be available to certain surviving spouses, children, or parents
• It may apply when a service member dies in the line of duty
• It may also apply when a Veteran dies from a service-connected injury or illness
• In some cases, a service-connected condition may contribute to the death, even if it was not the only cause
• This is different from VA Survivors Pension

DIC can be complicated, and families should not assume they are ineligible without asking.

Eligibility rules apply. Contact your County Veterans Service Officer or an accredited Veterans Service Organization for help understanding where to start.
