LD Expert Podcast: DYSLEXIA: It's Not Just Bs and Ds

Mixing up b's and d's is the dyslexia sign most people know. The visual disorientation some dyslexic readers experience can be much more dramatic:

✅ Letters that move, flip, or squish together

✅ A page that seems to pulse or shift

✅ Words that run right off the edge of the page

✅ Punctuation that looks like gnats flying across the page

✅ Lines of text that blur into one solid line

Reading like that is physically uncomfortable. It is one reason some kids get angry or shut down when asked to read, even kids who are usually easygoing.

Two visual pathways in the brain need to work in sync for print to look stable. When their timing is slightly off, the eye doesn't know where to land on the word. Part of addressing dyslexia is helping the brain process visual information clearly and consistently, so the page holds still and reading becomes possible.

LD Expert Podcast: When Behavior Is a Clue

A fourth grader was the class entertainer. Every time independent reading or writing started, so did the show. His teacher was convinced he had ADHD.

A closer look showed a pattern. He could read and write just well enough to make skipping the work look like a choice. Entertaining the class meant unfinished work went home, where Mom sat beside him and helped him through it.

Once he got help and his reading and writing skills improved, the ADHD-looking behaviors decreased.

When attention or behavior problems show up, look at the pattern:

✅ When does it happen?

✅ What is the child being asked to do?

The behavior may be pointing to the real struggle.

🎙️ Jill Stowell and Lauren Ma are going LIVE on the LD Expert Podcast on Tuesday, October 20 at 11 a.m. Pacific on YouTube and Facebook to answer your questions about dyslexia and reading struggles.

LD Expert Podcast: They Thought It Was ADD, But It Was Dyslexia

Raquel came to Stowell Learning Center at the end of third grade with a new diagnosis of attention deficit disorder. She had serious attention challenges at school and around homework.

Testing showed she was dyslexic.

After a seven-week summer intensive, three hours a day, five days a week, Raquel went from reading at a first grade level to a fifth grade level. She went on to graduate at the top of her high school class and later earned a university degree in geologic engineering with a 3.95 GPA.

Any learning challenge puts stress on the attention system. When attention problems show up mainly during reading and writing, reading and writing may be the place to look.

🎙️ Wondering if it's attention or something underneath? Jill Stowell and Lauren Ma are answering your questions about dyslexia LIVE on Tuesday, October 20 at 11 a.m. Pacific on YouTube and Facebook. Put your question in the comments.

LD Expert Podcast: Doing Fine and Working Too Hard Can Both Be True

School says she's doing fine. At home, the picture looks different.

Homework takes forever. She reads the same page over and over and still can't say what it was about. The spelling words she knew yesterday are gone today.

Bright kids can get very good at compensating. They find ways to get by and make it look like they're keeping up. The cost shows up at home:

✅ Exhaustion

✅ Frustration

✅ Homework battles

"Doing fine" and "working way too hard" can both be true, and both are part of the picture.

LD Expert Podcast: 3 Questions to Ask When Your Child Sits Down to Write

Here are three questions to ask whenever your child sits down to write:

✅ What is my child being asked to do or to learn?
✅ What skills are difficult for them right now?
✅ What tools will support learning without replacing it?

The answer might be pencil and paper. It might be typing, speech-to-text, or even AI. The goal is not to raise children who can write without AI. The goal is to raise children who can think, learn, and communicate, with or without it.

LD Expert Podcast: AI: Human Thinking is even MORE Important

Because AI exists, human thinking may actually matter more, not less.

Our children need to know how to ask good questions, organize their thoughts, communicate ideas clearly, think critically, solve problems creatively, and know when and how to use technology wisely. Those are human skills, and no tool can build them for a child.

LD Expert Podcast: AI Is a Partner, Not an Author

When students use AI to support their writing, they need to think of it as a partner, not an author.

That means never simply copying and pasting what AI produces. Instead, ask: Does this make sense? Does it reflect my thinking? Is it complete? What would I say differently? The student needs to stay the boss in the relationship with AI.

LD Expert Podcast: Dysgraphia Accommodations: Speech-to-Text

Speech-to-text can help a child express sophisticated ideas while they are still developing written language skills.

It is common for students with dyslexia or dysgraphia to write only with words they can spell, creating a huge gap between how they speak and how they write. A tool like speech-to-text closes that gap, letting a child's real thinking come through while writing skills continue to develop.

LD Expert Podcast: Dysgraphia: He Got a C on a Paper Full of A+ Ideas

So many bright students have great ideas and a strong grasp of what they are learning. But when those ideas hit paper, the papers come back covered in red marks for spelling, and a paper full of A+ ideas ends up with a C because of spelling or messy handwriting.

Sometimes the goal is to build a specific skill, like spelling. Sometimes the goal is simply to let a child show what they actually think and know. Those are not the same thing, and accommodations and skill-building can work together to support both.
