CODING COPD AND EMPHYSEMA 🔔 YES— you can code both emphysema and the exacerbation, but you must avoid coding a redundant “COPD, unspecified” along with emphysema. The key is: emphysema is a COPD subtype (so that takes precedence over generic COPD) and then you layer on the exacerbation if documented. 🏹
