We would LOVE to see our students join the Summer Reading Program this year! This is such a great opportunity for students to strengthen their reading skills, build confidence, and stay on track over the summer—all while having fun with their friends.

It’s FREE, includes meals, and even transportation is provided!

Ms. Roberta Martinez is a shining example of what it means to truly reflect the heart and commitment of a true Heart & Soul Early Childhood Champion ♥️.

As the library teacher at Chimayó Elementary School, she inspires a love of reading in all her students, with a special passion for working with kindergartners as they begin their journey as learners. She introduces young children to the parts of a book, reads engaging stories aloud, and nurtures the early literacy skills that help build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong appreciation for reading.

Especially meaningful is that Mrs. Martinez was nominated by a former student, a reflection of the lasting impact she has on the children and families she serves. She creates a welcoming space where students feel seen, safe, and supported, especially those facing difficult circumstances. Her willingness to check in, offer guidance, and make every child feel cared for reflects the deep love she has for her students. Through her kindness, presence, and unwavering support, Mrs. Martinez truly embodies what it means to be a Heart & Soul Early Childhood Champion.

On Day 4 of Week of the Young Child, we are honored to recognize Roberta Martinez, one of five 2026 Rio Arriba County Heart & Soul Early Childhood Champion award winners. Throughout the Week of the Young Child, we are proud to continue uplifting our community-nominated champions.
