Our Friends of Dorothy Book Club, in partnership with the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library, meets on the second Tuesday of each month @ 6pm at the Main Library, 140 S Paint St.

New members are always welcome!

On Tuesday, September 8th, we'll be discussing "Flamboyants: The Q***r Harlem Renaissance I Wish I'd Known" by George M Johnson: "A celebration of writers, performers, and activists from 1920s Black America whose sexualities have been obscured throughout history. Through 14 essays, Johnson reveals how American culture has been shaped by icons who are both Black and Q***r. And whose stories deserve to be celebrated in their entirety."

You can borrow the books we read from the Main library or Northside branch, or download them to your phone or tablet by going to crcpl.org/event/16704655

August is a good time to check in with yourself and with the people around you. The news cycle has been heavy this summer, and we know a lot of people in this community are carrying a lot. If you're doing okay, reach out to someone who might not be.

TOMORROW!! Join us for a welcoming, LGBTQIA+ focused NAMI Connections Group: Board Games and Conversation, where we blend board games and meaningful conversation to build connection and support.

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a free, peer-led space for adults who have experienced mental health symptoms. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from others’ challenges and successes in a relaxed, engaging environment, guided by trained leaders with lived experience.

This group is a partnership between NAMI of Southern Ohio, First Capital PRIDE Coalition, Sojourners, and United Way of Ross County.

Our next meetup is tomorrow, Friday August 14th from 6:00 to 8:00pm at United Way of Ross County, 69 E Water St. Come as you are!

You may have seen this story making the rounds last month. A Seattle-based organization called Them Before Us put up billboards across rural Ohio reading "No child has two dads. No child has two moms," printed in rainbow lettering. A photo of one of these billboards in Lima went viral. It was pointed out that this message doesn't just target same-sex families. It erases kids in foster homes, blended families, divorced households, and single-parent homes too. Equality Ohio said the billboards "don't just attack LGBTQ+ families, they erase every Ohio kid whose home doesn't fit a narrow, manufactured mold."

Dayton-based nonprofit Have A Gay Day responded by raising $18,000 to put up their own counter-billboards using the same font and aesthetic as the original, but declaring "Many children have two dads. Many children have two moms" instead. Ohio pushed back, loudly and creatively, and we love to see it. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ
