TOMORROW!! Our Friends of Dorothy Book Club, in partnership with the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library, meets on the second Tuesday of each month @ 6pm at the Main Library, 140 S Paint St.

New members are always welcome!

Tomorrow, Tuesday October 13th, we'll be discussing "My Darling, Dreadful Thing" by Johanna Van Veen: "Roos Beckman can see spirits. Her constant companion is Ruth, dead for centuries. Then wealthy widow Agnes Knoop appears at one of Roos' seances, and sparks fly. Roos follows her to Agnes' inherited estate, where illness, strange smells, and eerie statues fill the halls, yet the attraction between them only grows. When someone is murdered, poor Roos, with her history of 'hysterics,' is the easy suspect. She must uncover the truth before she loses her sanity, her innocence, and Agnes."

October is LGBTQ History Month. Every day, we’ll be sharing stories of resilience, courage, and PRIDE from across history. 🏳️‍🌈

Roberta Cowell was a British racing driver, fighter pilot, and engineer who became one of the first known people in Britain to undergo gender-affirming surgery in 1951. She had flown Spitfires during World War II, been captured and held in a German POW camp, and after the war pursued a career in motor racing before transitioning. Cowell maintained a low public profile for much of her life and gave relatively few interviews, but her story, a decorated war veteran and accomplished athlete, living as herself quietly and on her own terms, represents an important thread in trans history that often gets overlooked. She died in 2011 at 93. The courage it took to do what she did in 1950s Britain, without community, without precedent, without much support, is difficult to overstate.

October is LGBTQ History Month. Every day, we’ll be sharing stories of resilience, courage, and PRIDE from across history. 🏳️‍🌈

Lou Sullivan was a gay transgender man who lived during a time when the medical establishment insisted that he could not and should not exist. Doctors in the 1970s and 80s routinely denied gender-affirming care to trans people who were gay or bisexual, believing that transition was only legitimate if it led to heterosexuality. Sullivan fought that system, advocated for himself and others, and helped dismantle those gatekeeping rules. He founded FTM International, one of the first organizations specifically for trans men. Sullivan kept meticulous diaries from his teen years until his death from AIDS-related illness in 1991, and those diaries are now a foundational archive of trans history.

October is LGBTQ History Month. Every day, we’ll be sharing stories of resilience, courage, and PRIDE from across history. 🏳️‍🌈

Cherrie L. Moraga is a q***r Chicana writer, poet, and playwright whose work has helped define what it means to think and write at the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality. She co-edited "This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color" in 1981, an anthology that became one of the most influential feminist texts of the twentieth century and a foundational document for intersectional feminist thought. Her plays, essays, and memoir have continued that work, grounding political theory in lived experience with a specificity that makes her arguments impossible to dismiss. Moraga has spent decades teaching and writing on the margins that mainstream feminism and mainstream LGBTQ politics have both tried to claim and then ignore.

TONIGHT!! Join us for a welcoming, LGBTQIA+ focused NAMI Connections Group: Board Games and Conversation, where we blend board games and meaningful conversation to build connection and support.

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a free, peer-led space for adults who have experienced mental health symptoms. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from others’ challenges and successes in a relaxed, engaging environment, guided by trained leaders with lived experience.

This group is a partnership between NAMI of Southern Ohio, First Capital PRIDE Coalition, Sojourners, and United Way of Ross County.

Our next meetup is tonight, Friday October 9th from 6:00 to 8:00pm at United Way of Ross County, 69 E Water St. Come as you are!

October is LGBTQ History Month. Every day, we’ll be sharing stories of resilience, courage, and PRIDE from across history. 🏳️‍🌈

David Bowie spent his career refusing to be one thing. Through Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, the Thin White Duke, and a dozen other personas, he challenged what a pop star could look like, what a man could wear, and what gender could mean in the context of rock and roll. He came out as bisexual in a 1972 Melody Maker interview, which was a remarkable thing to do at the height of mainstream fame, and later walked some of that back in ways that frustrated fans. But his influence on generations of q***r people who saw in him a mirror and a permission slip is beyond dispute. His music, from "Hunky Dory" to "Blackstar," released two days before his death in 2016, continued to evolve in ways that most artists never attempt. He made weirdness feel like the most elegant option.
