In 1829, a 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn stood before a packed audience in Berlin, about to conduct a piece of music that had not been heard in nearly a century. The air was thick with anticipation. As the first notes of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion filled the hall, a wave of emotion swept over the listeners. Many had never heard anything like it before. By the time the final chorus faded into silence, the audience sat in awe—Bach’s genius had been rediscovered.

Just a few years earlier, Bach’s music was largely forgotten, considered old-fashioned and irrelevant in the fast-changing world of early 19th-century Europe. But Mendelssohn, a prodigy with an insatiable curiosity for the past, had stumbled upon a manuscript of the St. Matthew Passion and was captivated by its beauty and complexity. Determined to bring it back to life, he painstakingly studied the score, convinced his friend Eduard Devrient to help organize a performance, and fought against skeptics who doubted that audiences would care about this “ancient” music.

His persistence paid off. That performance in 1829 didn’t just revive St. Matthew Passion—it reignited interest in Bach’s entire body of work, leading to the worldwide recognition he enjoys today. Without Mendelssohn’s passion and vision, Bach’s music might have remained buried in the archives for many more years.
