🐝 🐛 🕷️ 1st grade has become experts on minibeasts (macroinvertebrates)! 🐌 🪱 🦋
They’ve been immersed in learning- reading lots of nonfiction books, publishing essays, creating models, scientific drawings, dissecting flowers & classroom simulations to explore pollination, completing a citizen science on ant diets. 🐜 🔍
🧑🏼‍🍳 🍯 Some of our students that chose chef as their career interest customized a honey recipe, while learning about the health benefits of nature’s sweetener. 🐝 👩🏽‍🍳
Now, these little biologists are ready to tap into their Compassion and use their knowledge to take action to help our local pollinators! 💙

🦅 Kindergarten Muddy Boots included an investigation of bird communication, thus VOICE groups were designed to extend on this content for the little ornithologists.🐦‍⬛ Some students studied raptors, some learned about nests so they could design their own, while others used our engineering process to design birdhouses for town birds.

We love welcoming fellow STEM educators to our school! It was a pleasure to host the team from Steubenville’s McKinley STEM Academy, who made the three-hour journey to see the engaging, real-world learning experiences our students participate in every day.

As a school aligned with the Ohio STEM Learning Network’s designation rubric, we are proud to provide a student-centered learning environment that emphasizes collaboration, real-world connections, and the development of critical thinking skills. We’re grateful for the opportunity to share ideas and continue growing alongside other educators who are passionate about innovative STEM education.

✔️✔️ Twice a year, every year, every student takes their knowledge from classroom studies into the field. check out our kindergarten biologists!💙

In addition to this hands-on, environmental education at Buzzard’s Roost🏞️, students are exploring animal communication in their classrooms through reading, writing, math, engineering, and science investigations. ✅
Plus, the students that chose biologist as their career interest have been digging deeper in VOICE studies with a STEM facilitator.

🌬️🎈🔢📋Our second grade field scientists stepped into the role of meteorologists for their spring Muddy Boots Expedition! Equipped with anemometers and nontraditional science tools, they put their field science skills (some of which started in kindergarten!) into action—collecting real-world wind data. 🌬️🎈🔢📋

Each year, AT LEAST twice a year, every student takes learning beyond the classroom into a local greenspace, building on their knowledge through hands-on field experiences. We’re incredibly grateful to Ross County Park District for providing access to the spaces that make these experiences possible! 💙
