Wednesday, March 18th – Sue Bousquet on Maude Tait. The flyer in the photo posted here is the legendary Maude Tait, born in Chicopee, whose family, among other business interests, owned the property that would one day become Springfield Airport. Later generations know it as the Springfield Plaza, but in the Roaring Twenties, it was the site of important advances in aviation under the Granville Brothers. Maude Tait was one of the era's symbolic "modern women," an aviatrix whose home base was the Springfield Airport. Sue Bousquet, docent at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, will present a talk on this remarkable woman for Women's History Month.

Now for a peek at our Spring Presentations!

Wednesday, April 15th – Dennis Picard on Hessians in Western Mass. during the Revolutionary War. We welcome back a favorite speaker, local historian and reenactor Dennis Picard, to usher in our 2026 250th anniversary celebrations with a talk on the enemy Hessian mercenary soldiers -- how they came to western Massachusetts, who they were, and why some of them even remained here after the war.

Wednesday, May 20th – The long-anticipated display case for our Inshaw rifle is currently being manufactured. In May, we will hold a special presentation installing the case at the Chicopee Public Library and unveiling the Inshaw Rifle in its new home on loan to the library, where this valuable artifact, important to Chicopee's history, may be studied and appreciated.

Wednesday, June 17th – our annual business meeting, where we review the past year's efforts and prepare for future projects. As always, the public is invited to attend to give us your input.

FROM "THE CHICOPEE HISTORICAL SOCIETY " We're pleased to announce the launch of our book, Richard B. Inshaw: A Craftman's Life and Work in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The book is 47 pages and tells the story of an English immigrant's work and life here in Chicopee dating from the 1830s through to his descendants in the early 20th century and the enormous growth and changes in the city through that era. The book contains many photos and maps, and a section on the details of his remarkable "Inshaw Rifle" that is in the Historical Society's collection, and that we hope to put on display in the library when funds become available for us to purchase a museum-quality case. The price is $20.
The book will be on sale at all our presentations (AND AT THE BELLAMY HOUSE TOMORROW), and you can also purchase it in paperback or in eBook from Amazon here. With the holiday season coming up, we think it would make a great gift.

A fire burned down the old 'original' Chicopee High School on Front St. across from Academy

St. back on January 17, 1916. The fire started in the early morning hours of that day, the first alarm of which was sounded shortly after 5:00 AM. See the newspaper article of the fire (graciously submitted by Mr. Walter K. Fogg Jr.). The Chicopee Parks and Rec. offices now sit where the original CHS burned down, which is across from the main entrance to Szot Park.

The old CHS at 650 Front St. went up in 1921. Great article by Stephen Jendrysik link > (https://www.masslive.com/living/2013/03/stephen_jendrysik_coakleys_folly_gave_chicopee_a_new_high_school.htmlCHS
