Chico Unified Teachers Association has a membership of over 700 talented, hardworking educators who are dedicated to their students, to public education, and to the teaching profession. Together we are stronger, together we are CUTA. Meet CUTA member Melissa Willson! In the photo you can see Melissa working with students and an AAC device, a tool used to help non-verbal (or partially non-verbal) students communicate.

Name: Melissa Willson aka Teacher Melissa
School: Emma Wilson
Subject/Grade: ESN TK-K
Years teaching: 11 years as a Teacher and 5 years as a paraprofessional.

What I do when I’m not teaching: Besides spending time with family and friends, I usually go to the gym. I love to be cuddled up with a blanket and a good book or a movie on a rainy day. I love to travel and experience new cultures.

The best thing about teaching is the students. It’s seeing their little faces light up when they have mastered a skill, watching them grow and develop all their abilities, and forming a bond with each student.

Quote from a fellow CUTA member: "Melissa pours so much love into her students and goes above and beyond every day to make sure they feel supported, understood, and believed in". - Gina Vernau

Way to go!

We Won Paid Pregnancy Leave!

Starting January 1, 2027, California's school staff will have up to 14 weeks of PAID pregnancy disability leave. We fought hard for this and we did it together. Every one of us who shared our story, gathered signatures or showed up at the Capitol to fight for this leave made this happen. This legislation will transform the lives of California families for generations and we won it together.
