There’s something about making a fire with your own hands that never gets old.

Hand drill is about as simple as it gets. Two pieces of wood, your hands, and knowing what to do with them. But that simple skill goes back thousands and thousands of years.

For most of human history, fire wasn’t something you could take for granted. Knowing how to make it meant warmth, cooked food, light, protection. It meant survival.

I think that’s why these skills still mean so much to me.

When you’re sitting in the dirt spinning a hand drill between your palms, working for that tiny coal, you’re doing something our ancestors did over and over again. The same basic movements. The same frustration when it doesn’t work. And probably the same feeling when you finally see that little wisp of smoke coming from the dust.

We don’t practice these skills because we think we need to go backwards.

We practice them because they remind us where we came from.

There’s a lot we’ve gained in the modern world, but I think we’ve lost some things too. Sometimes getting your hands dirty and struggling to make something as simple as a fire is a good way to remember just how capable we are.

These skills belong to all of us. They’re part of being human.

Carry the fire.

Haven’t been on social media much lately! Here’s a few quick updates. I got a laser engraver to start doing my own bottles after struggling with my previous supplier. Been on a laser engraving frenzy! Had to make signs for my desert oasis.
Also finished up a custom primal blade with a bison leg bone handle!
