Time for an end of the year not-so-humble brag about PHHA faculty!

Dr. Kwadwo Boakye has received two awards to end the 2025-2026 year! Dr. Boakye has received a RSCA Grants for Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities. RSCA grants are allocated by CSU Chancellors Office and are awarded to faculty through a competitive process. Kwadwo's grant is titled Artificial Light at Night & Diabetes Prevalence Across California Census Tracts. Kwadwo will be able to hire student researchers to assist on this research & develop skills for their future careers. Kwadwo was also nominated for a Chancellor's Early Career Faculty Fellowship that will provide him with an opportunity to visit Washington DC & network with Federal Grant Officers to develop relationships to expand opportunities to receive grant money to support his research.

Dr. Christine Leistner also received two awards this year. First, the Exceptional Service Assigned Time (ESAT) Award to continue developing a ByStander Intervention program to help students develop skills to interrupt & prevent sexual violence on campus. Secondly, she'll be partnering with other faculty to work on a research project titled "Humanities in Action: A Multi-Campus Student Research Podcast Initiative."

Finally, Dr. Lindsay Briggs received the Carol Burr Award from the Gender & Sexuality Equity Coalition for her work on campus promoting inclusion for women & the LGBTQ+ community.

We are so proud of the work you’ve done in our program, and we look forward to seeing the change you make in the world! Special thanks also to Dr. Rick Narad who is retiring after 37 years teaching! We will miss you Rick!

Are you an undergraduate or recent grad interested in a unique training opportunity in public health leadership, focusing on maternal and child health? If so, we invite you to apply to the summer 2026 Maternal Child Health Career/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement – Undergraduate program (MCHS/RISE-UP) at the UC Davis MIND Institute.

The MIND Institute is partnering with the Kennedy Krieger Institute to again offer the program this summer. The Sacramento-based site focuses on neurodevelopmental disabilities, mental health and co-occurring conditions. It is an 8-week program.
