I *highly* recommend this series by cognitive behavioralist John Vervaeke from the University of Toronto. It makes the case for the significance of the history of religion, together with the history of philosophy, for understanding our current common psychological predicament. He makes use of important recent scholarship. You can also watch it on Youtube (Vervaeke lectures with a whiteboard and the scholarship he cites appears there clearly). The podcast version is for listening while you drive, work out, walk etc.
