We couldn’t be prouder to see one of our own featured in the Oklahoma State Department of Education’s new “Why I Teach Wednesdays” series!

We are grateful, Kayla Locke has chosen to spend her career making a difference in the lives of children. Thank you for believing in our students, Kayla! 🍎💜

We invite you to read her full “Why I Teach” story below. ⬇️

Behind every classroom is a teacher with a story.

A story about the teacher who inspired them. A student who changed them. A moment that reminded them why they chose education in the first place.

Today, we are launching Why I Teach Wednesdays, a new series celebrating educators across Oklahoma and the many reasons they choose to dedicate their lives to students.

For Kayla Locke, teaching is about more than reading and math. It’s about believing in every child even when they may not yet believe in themselves.

Now beginning her 16th year in education, Kayla teaches second grade at Chickasha Public Schools. She became a teacher because she wanted to help children, especially those who may be going through a difficult time.

One of the moments that has stayed with Kayla throughout her career involved a student who came to her classroom struggling and was known for getting into trouble. Rather than focusing only on the behavior, Kayla focused on building a relationship, keeping her promises and showing that student they were loved and supported.

Over time, everything changed.

The student began looking forward to school, working hard, staying out of trouble and even encouraging others.

“That reminded me that sometimes the greatest impact we make isn’t just through academics, but by showing a child they matter,” Kayla shared.

That is what keeps her inspired after 15 years in the classroom: the little moments. The moment something finally clicks. The smile when a student accomplishes something they worked hard for. The confidence that grows when a child realizes they can do something they once thought was impossible.

Kayla was inspired to become a teacher by her own first- and second-grade teachers, and she comes from a family of educators, including her dad, aunt and several cousins. Now, she hopes to give her students the same feeling of being cared for, supported and excited to learn.

Her advice to someone considering a career in education?

“Do it! Teaching has its hard days, but the rewards are so much greater. There is nothing like watching a child learn, grow, and believe in themselves because you took the time to encourage them. Those are the moments that make it the best job in the world.”

Thank you, Kayla, for 16 years of believing in Oklahoma students and for reminding us why teachers matter!
