Parents, detour to the south side. Not sure how long this semi will be parked on country club and 16th St.

Have you started potty learning yet?! Keep watching for my response and added tip to @mindfulplay.ot ‘s awesome reel!

And yes, I said potty learning. 🤓👇

I think when we call it potty training it puts us into the mode that it’s something we need to do to a child. Calling it potty learning puts the adult in the role of the TEACHER and creates PARTNERSHIP between the adult and child to learn these new skills.

When you think about it, most children spend 2-3 years not paying attention to their elimination habits. Then we expect them to have this awareness 24/7 in a very short time.

Get your toddler involved in the process by setting them up for success. Giving them the tools they need to reach the potty in time (whether it’s a special seat or step stool up to the toilet), pants that aren’t too tight or hard to get off in time, clear guidance for using the potty, and having them help clean up accidents when they happen.

Now, when a child does have an accident,(which is inevitable) it feels like it creates a lot of extra work and can feel frustrating for it to happen again and again. But remember, an accident is just an accident. It’s NOT the end of the world and your child is NOT failing.

Shaming your toddler (“You peed in your pants again!”) won’t change the outcome. Instead of this response, create awareness and give them the guidance they need to accomplish this exciting milestone.

Empowering toddlers goes a long way in teaching them this life skill at their pace and on their level. Above all else, patience is key.

What challenges have you faced with your toddler around the potty?
