Samuel “Nails” Morton was a close friend and trusted associate of North Side Gang leader Dean O’Banion during Chicago’s bloody Prohibition-era gang wars. Despite surviving the violent streets of Chicago, Morton met a bizarre and unexpected end in 1923 when he was reportedly thrown from his horse near Lincoln Park and kicked in the back of the head, killing him instantly.

His strange death became one of the most unusual stories connected to the early Chicago gangsters, proving that even some of the city’s most feared figures could meet an unpredictable fate.

Michael Cassius McDonald was one of Chicago’s biggest underworld figures decades before the rise of Al Capone and the Outfit. In the late 1800s, he built a powerful gambling empire and became heavily connected to politicians, saloons, and the city’s growing vice scene. Known as the “Gambling King of Chicago,” McDonald helped lay the foundation for the kind of organized crime that would later take over the city during the Prohibition era. Many consider him one of the first major crime bosses in Chicago history
