Photography forever changed art making. With a single press of a button, and some knowledge of chemistry, one could capture a perfectly realistic image. Fast forward to modern day, our smart phones, digital cameras, and editing programs do a lot of work for us. That doesn’t mean that it takes any less creativity and dedication to create stunning and meaningful photographs. Artists are always pushing the limits of any and all new art forms that come their way, and so new possibilities always remain.

Intro to Photography students will be introduced to the basics, such as composition, lighting, timing, focal point, color use, black and white balance, etc. and how to apply those to an expressive and fun process of creating their own photography while expanding the their perception of what photography can be. Students will complete a portfolio of digital photographs representing the various skills and concepts learned throughout the course.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS:
One Digital Camera

- An iPhone or equivalent Android cellphone camera, a “point and shoot” camera, or even a fancy DSLR will work.
- Minimum of 5 mega pixels (i.e. iPhone 4 and up)
- needs to be capable of importing images to a desktop (i.e. through a usb cord or memory card)
- must be available for students' use outside of class with at least 500mb of storage.

MATERIALS INCLUDED:

- One USB drive for in and out of class use
- High quality printed images of selected student work
- Any app, online storage, or subscriptions that may be used in class

A friend and fashion design student at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago contacted me, asking if any of my fashion design students would be interested in wearing some of her looks and having a photo shoot in the Chinatown Square. It was a wonderful learning opportunity and each student was able to participate either by dressing up or helping with the photo taking process.
Special thanks to Jeneane, the designer, and Xu, the photographer!!!

Snow and I had the privilege of meeting with Ms. Zhu, an art education Phd student, and Ms. Shen, a Masters student, both from Capital Normal University in Beijing (the 2nd ranked teacher universities in China). They are leaders in a Chinese art education organization and were visiting the U.S. to do research on art education. Through a friend, they heard about HamptonArts and were interested in learning about our approach to art education and collaborating. We could have talked for hours.

Watercolor has been the go to medium for fashion designers. It's unique expressive qualities capture the impressions, yet it's unpredictability opens doors for inspiration. For students who have some experience with watercolor and an interest in fashion design, this course will expand and apply skills to develop inspired fashion collections.

HamptonArts, focuses on developing educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom. With each course, students have access to their course page, providing reference points they can use for as long as they wish. Each consecutive course builds from the experience of the last, where students develop an awareness of their creative goals and processes.

Intro to Watercolor 2

This course had one goal: experience through experimentation. The best way to master watercolor is to experiment and use the results in your work. Building the students repertoire, they experimented with watercolor additives, such as salt, dish soap, alcohol, and powdered laundry detergent, to name a few.
The final hurrah was using latex fixative, to create resists and depth in their work.

Illustrative Character Design (ICD) & Cartoon Studio

ICD and Cartoon Studio shared similar focuses. Cartoon Studio was kind of an ICD Lite, focused more towards a younger age group. Both courses ended creating a similar final project. Their goal was to use the illustrative processes and techniques they learned throughout the semester. You can see the students using their light boards to work through the process of Sketching, Inking, and Coloring (they learned a lot more than that).
