Empowering Students through a Bilingual, International Education from Preschool through High School GISC welcomes students of all backgrounds and nationalities.

The German International School Chicago (GISC) is an independent, non-profit private school offering a bilingual, international education to around 200 students from Preschool through Middle School. GISC is expanding into High School, launching Grade 9 in the 2026-2027 school year and adding one grade level each year, with the first graduating class set for 2030. ISC provides a supportive, individualized environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and global awareness. Students become fluent in German and English and grow into well-rounded, creative, and responsible global citizens. The current student body represents over 35 nationalities. GISC fosters open-mindedness, inclusivity, and a strong sense of community. GISC is an official German School Abroad (Deutsche Auslandsschule - DAS), IB World School (authorized for the PYP), Accredited Member School of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), PASCH Partner School, and DSD School. Students without prior knowledge of the German language are welcome to apply through Grade 6 via GISC's Become Bilingual Program (BBP) and Fast Track German Language Program (FTGLP).

German-American Maker Lab: Design. Build. Innovate.

Our high school students have started the first German-American Maker Lab at GISC! Over the coming weeks, they’ll build new skills step by step before bringing them all together in one final project: designing and building their own functional lamp.

Along the way, students will learn how to solder and work with LED electronics, create 3D CAD designs for 3D printing, and develop 2D CAD designs for laser-cutting plywood and acrylic. They’ll also learn woodworking techniques, building their lamp bases from layers of plywood and using sanding and finishing techniques to turn individual pieces into a polished final product.

The goal is not simply to make a lamp. Students experience the complete maker process: imagine, design, prototype, fabricate, assemble, test, improve – and create something of their own.

Want to join us? The German-American Maker Lab is a free pilot program open to all Grade 9 and 10 students from any school. We meet at GISC on Tuesdays from 3:30–5:00 pm through December 15, 2026. The program is taught in English, no previous maker experience is required, and students can join at any time.

A wonderful evening with our GISC community! 💙

Thank you to all the parents who joined us last night for our Parent Evening! It was wonderful to see a full house at GISC, connect with families, and kick off the new school year together.

The evening also included a special celebration honoring last year’s Grade 8 students as they received their DSD I certificates. 🎓 Congratulations to all of them – every single student passed the DSD I!

This internationally recognized German language diploma marks an important milestone for our students and is an integral part of our bilingual German-English education. We’re excited to have welcomed our first Grade 9 class this year as we begin our high school program at GISC – more on this exciting milestone to come!

A special thank-you to our Head of School, Rasmus Frederich, and our Head of German, Ulf Hennig, for presenting the certificates and celebrating this achievement with our students and community. We’re especially grateful to Herrn Hennig for teaching and preparing our Grade 8 students for the DSD I.

The 2026–2027 school year is officially underway!

After a summer away, it was so lovely to welcome our new and returning families to GISC with big smiles and plenty of first-day excitement.

For our Kindergarten and new Grade 1 students, the first day was an especially meaningful milestone. They celebrated their Einschulungsfeier, or First Day of School Ceremony, and received traditional Schultüten—colorful school cones filled with treats and small surprises to mark the beginning of their school journey. 🎉

We also held our first Parent Coffee of the year—a chance for parents to reconnect, meet new families, and start the school year together. ☕️

We’re looking forward to a year filled with new discoveries, friendships, learning, growth, and plenty of fun along the way.

A beautiful afternoon bringing our GISC community together! Our Potluck Picnic was a wonderful opportunity for old and new families to make connections, share memories, and get to know one another. We were also happy to welcome both new and longtime teachers and staff to the celebration.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a special afternoon! We can’t wait to see our community again at our Back to School Celebration this Sunday – and then welcome everyone back for the first day of school on Tuesday! 💙
