Sometimes I forget that I’m also a math teacher…I remember when I first wanted to teach, I had my heart *set* on being a middle school French teacher (can you even imagine??). I was a substitute teacher for a few years while I went back to school, and I taught all grades and subjects K-12 in Cicero, Elmwood Park, and River Forest.

The first time I substituted in River Forest SD90 was in Mr. Kadlec’s middle school science class at Roosevelt. I knew I wanted to be there; so much so that I took one of the world’s original selfies, standing in front of the empty classroom, with the first camera phone, grinning like a freak who had no idea what kind of adventure she was about to go on.

But after I substituted in Kindergarten at Lincoln Elementary, I knew Kindergarten was the best.

And it still really is! I love teaching my K-1 math class, Get Your Facts Straight. It was original math class of the collection of classes I created. It’s been running 3x weekly since summer 2020- sometimes with several sections of six learners; sometimes with just one. But it runs year-round, regardless.

I started Flying Start, LLC in 2019 with the desire to incorporate real-life, real-work, and real-learning opportunities into public school classrooms by connecting schools with small business owners to complete design, technology, and communication tasks.

Under the excellent tutelage of Chicago’s 1871, I built Flying Start from an idea to an actual business that was beginning to gain traction.

Then came cancer and almost simultaneously, the SARS-Covid19 pandemic. Flying Start pivoted (the word of 2020) to an online learning platform, which turned out to be quite perfect for the times. It was entirely unexpected, but absolutely wonderful. I loved being able to work with so many learners around the world.

I built out an entire online learning platform, GetAFlyingStart.com, and an app in order to serve my learners. However, a few weeks ago, my website went down, and down HARD. I built it, but I have no idea how to fix it. I’ve decided to ditch the site for now, which I am sad about because it was a lot of work.

However, Flying Start continues- and thrives- as an education company. I will continue to produce books, apps, and other content under the Flying Start name. For teaching, I’ve returned to using Outschool as my learning hub. Happily, this cuts down on expenses, lets me focus on teaching, and gives me a broader audience.
