If you look closely enough at this picture, you’ll find me. 👀
In most of the other pictures of me in the orchestra, It’s easy to find me because I am the only person of African descent in the photo. 😔 The first time I played in an all-Black professional orchestra of this size I sat on the stage and cried. I didn’t realize how a lifetime of being “the only” affected my body. Come with me on this journey to tell my story of being a Classical musician of African descent, specifically in America. 🎶🎻
Come hear me perform with other professional musicians of African descent with Gateways Festival Orchestra, now in Chicago at Symphony Center. Get your tickets today because we sold out Carnegie Hall! ‼️

This Black History Month, we are proud to celebrate some of the Black historic figures who have left an indelible mark on the world of music. 🎶 As we honor the incredible contributions of Black musicians, let’s also take this moment to amplify the voices of the underrepresented in classical music. Tag and uplift Black artists, and engage in conversations that foster understanding and unity!
Consider exploring and supporting Black-owned businesses, amplifying Black voices in literature, film, and art. Educate yourself on the history and ongoing achievements of the Black community. Small actions, when multiplied, can create a powerful impact.
Let’s make this Black History Month a time of reflection, appreciation, and contribution. 📚✊🏾
