DuSable High School was revamped as a multiplex campus in late 2005, housing three small schools which are Bronzeville Scholastic Institute, Williams Prep (formerly the Daniel Hale Williams Prepratory School of Medicine), and DuSable Leadership Academy (a Betty Shabbaz International Charter School).

Today, we honor jazz legend and DuSable alum, Dinah Washington. Inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame by Natalie Cole, daughter of alum and singer Nat King Cole in 1993, Washington graduated in 1942 (DuSable's 6th Graduating Class)

DuSable High School has a rich history especially in the field of music.

In this video, learn about Von Freeman, a jazz saxophonist who attended DuSable and was taught by a giant in Chicago music education, Dr. Walter Dyett (whose life-sized statue sits outside of the campus and auditorium is named after).

Von Freeman 2012 NEA Jazz Master Von Freeman was considered a founder of the "Chicago School" of jazz tenorists, a distinction shared with Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, and Clifford Jordan.

Before Black History Month comes to an end, here is a cool video from 1983 of the late Mayor Harold Washington's visit to DuSable High School.

Washington attended DuSable from 1936-1939 and his diploma was awarded after military service in 1946.
