Wishing all of our residents a warm and happy Thanksgiving

Remembering 9/11 in Solidarity
September 11, 2025
The Chicago Board of Education joins the District and the nation in honoring the victims who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, the heroic first responders, and the many families who were forever impacted by the senseless terrorist attacks.
Around the world and here at home, we continue to witness violence and instability—from the increased presence of federal agents in our streets; from political violence in states such as Utah and Minnesota, to the daily toll of gun violence impacting school communities across the country.
As we mark the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we continue to hold the nearly 3,000 victims close to our hearts as we stand in solidarity with their families, friends, and communities to denounce violence of any kind and strive for peace, compassion, and a safer world for all to enjoy.

Last night, the Chicago Public Schools Board delivered a balanced and responsible FY26 budget—one that protects classrooms, avoids new debt, and stands firm on fairness.
This outcome didn’t happen overnight. It was the result of hard work, tough conversations, debates, Op-Eds, media interviews, and community engagement. I want to especially thank my colleagues in this picture——for their dedication, persistence, and willingness to wrestle with difficult decisions so that we could deliver for our families, kids, and communities.
Thank You to BM López, BM DeBerry, BM Bannon, BM Thotakura, and BM Wallace - for your YES vote as well and for voting for our kids.
To everyone else who made this possible—our civic and community partners, parents, union allies, elected officials in the Senate and House, and our City Council leaders—THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Your voices and advocacy made all the difference.
This budget is an important step forward, but the work does not end here. Now we turn our attention to FY27 and the critical task of working with the City of Chicago to begin the process of disentanglement and working with our legislative partners in Springfield—so that we can ensure CPS can stand on strong, independent financial footing for years to come.

These are the reasons why I am voting YES for the FY26 CPS budget and I ask the other 18 members to join me in supporting this budget.

The FY 26 CPS budget moves our schools forward—protecting classroom funding, avoiding new borrowing, and beginning to shrink future deficits.
This is more than just numbers—it’s about students, teachers, and families. A budget that keeps resources where they belong: in our classrooms.
