This week, our team was in Worcester, Massachusetts, working alongside a cohort of district educators to explore what it looks like to bring Youth Participatory Action Research into curriculum and instructional practice.

Throughout the week, we created space for educators to deepen their understanding of YPAR while exploring student centered inquiry, cognitive sovereignty, culturally responsive teaching, and the conditions necessary for young people to develop their learning power.

At the heart of this work is a powerful question: What becomes possible when we equip educators to create learning experiences where students are not simply participants, but researchers, problem solvers, and leaders capable of investigating the issues that matter to them and their communities?

We’re grateful to Worcester Public Schools for continuing to invest in this work and for another opportunity to learn, plan, and grow together.

What happens when adults are willing to release power and truly trust students to lead?

Youth Participatory Action Research is not simply about asking students what they think. It requires adults to create space for young people to identify the issues that matter to them, conduct meaningful research, make sense of what they discover, and bring their recommendations to the people with the power to create change.

That also means adults have to be willing to listen differently, step back when necessary, and recognize students as researchers, advocates, and leaders in their own right.

The work doesn’t end when the project does.

Throughout this past school year, we had the privilege of partnering with Students Making Change, a group of student fellows within Lowell Public Schools to deepen their work through Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR).

Together, students stepped into the roles of researchers, advocates, and leaders, using surveys, interviews, focus groups, Photovoice, and existing data to investigate inequities within their own school community. Their work ultimately led to recommendations for change and a community presentation where students had the opportunity to share their research and invite others into the work alongside them.

But one of the most important questions remained: How do we make sure this work continues?

Last week, we welcomed two educators from Lowell Public Schools to Chicago for a retreat focused specifically on that question. In an intimate loft setting, we spent time reflecting, strategically planning, and thinking deeply about the systems and structures needed to sustain Students Making Change and student leadership for years to come.

It has been incredible to witness the growth of this partnership and, most importantly, the commitment of the students and adults in Lowell who continue to move this work forward.

We’re deeply grateful for their trust, their partnership, and their belief in the power of young people to help shape more equitable school communities.

In collaboration with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), we were honored to create Bridges to Belonging: A Leadership Fellowship for Two-Way Family Engagement, a six-session learning experience designed to strengthen how educational leaders engage families as true partners in student learning and school improvement.

What the Fellowship Focuses On:
This work centers on advancing equity through culturally and linguistically responsive family engagement. It supports leaders in strengthening two-way communication practices and building systems that position families as co-educators and co-decision makers.

What We Aim to Build:
The fellowship is designed to develop leaders who can design, implement, and sustain inclusive engagement practices that remove barriers, elevate family voice, and ultimately strengthen student outcomes across schools and districts.

Each session has had over 140 participants representing 29 school districts across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Each participant could earn up to 20 Professional Development Points (PDPs). This fellowship program builds leadership capacity to transform family engagement from isolated efforts into a coherent, equity-driven system—one that fosters belonging, strengthens partnerships, and creates the conditions for all students and families to thrive.

“One of the goals of education is not simply to fill students with facts and information but to help them learn how to learn.”

Few people have challenged and inspired our thinking quite like Zaretta Hammond.

Her keynote at Bend The Arc Summit 2026 reminded us that great teaching is about so much more than delivering content. It’s about creating the conditions for students to become independent learners, equipping them with the tools to think critically, solve problems, and take ownership of their learning.

We’re deeply grateful to Zaretta for sharing her wisdom, challenging our assumptions, and reminding us what is possible when we intentionally design learning experiences that build both intellect and belonging.

In partnership with Alma del Mar Charter School leadership, The Equity Imperative supported the design and launch of a cohesive, equity-centered implementation plan focused on strengthening instructional practice, school culture, and student belonging. The work combined strategic planning, leadership alignment, systems design, and professional learning to ensure clarity, coherence, and actionable next steps across the organization.

SNAPSHOT OF THE WORK

* Supported program design for school culture and student support systems, including:

* School site visits to observe current systems and practices in action
* Stakeholder interviews to gather insight from key voices across the school communities
* Review of existing artifacts (vision, mission, programming, and related documents) to assess alignment and gaps
* Utilized collaborative protocols to hear from, and then draft a clear vision for culture and climate, along with a delineated implementation approach

* Designed and facilitated in-person professional learning for administrative leadership, including:

* A two-session learning series focused on evidence-informed strategies to strengthen school culture and climate
* Tools and frameworks to increase student, family, and staff belonging
* Practical application of strategies to support consistent implementation across school systems

Overall, Year One established a strong foundation for alignment, equity-centered leadership practice, and the development of coherent systems to support student success and belonging.

One of the most meaningful additions to Bend The Arc Summit was the launch of our Salita Segments.

In Puerto Rican culture, salita refers to the living room, a place where people gather for honest conversations, meaningful connection, and shared stories. That’s exactly what these sessions became.

Attendees had the opportunity to step into the Salita, sit alongside experienced practitioners and thought leaders, ask questions, share perspectives, and engage in conversations that extended far beyond a traditional presentation. There was no stage separating speakers from participants. Just people learning with one another.

The vulnerability, curiosity, and wisdom shared in these spaces reminded us that some of the most powerful professional learning happens through conversation.

To every Salita facilitator and every attendee who showed up with openness and authenticity, thank you for making these sessions one of the highlights of the summit.

We can’t wait to continue growing the Salita experience at Bend The Arc Summit 2027.

As we’ve been reflecting on Bend The Arc Summit 2026, we keep coming back to this moment. Educators, leaders, researchers, and changemakers from across the country gathered together with a shared commitment to strengthen instructional practice, cultivate belonging, and learn from one another. While we missed a few who had to head home before this photo was taken, this image represents a community that showed up with open minds, generous hearts, and a willingness to grow together.

To every person who joined us, thank you. Thank you for your conversations, your vulnerability, your questions, your laughter, and your commitment to this work. You helped create an experience that reminded us meaningful change doesn’t happen alone. It happens when we bend the arc together.

We’re incredibly grateful for each of you and can’t wait to continue the journey. Here’s to carrying this momentum back to our schools, districts, and organizations and to gathering again next year.

What an incredible few days!!!

Our hearts are full as we reflect on everything that made Bend The Arc Summit 2026 so special. To every educator, leader, researcher, and changemaker who chose to spend these three days learning alongside us, thank you. Whether you traveled across the country, joined us from the Chicago area, or returned after last year’s experience, your presence made this community what it was.

A heartfelt thank you to our keynote speakers, Zaretta Hammond Zaretta Hammond and Dr. Amanda Lewis, for sharing their wisdom, challenging our thinking, and inspiring us to continue bending the arc towards justice and deeper belonging. Thank you to every Salita facilitator and participant for creating spaces of honest conversation, vulnerability, and meaningful connection. Those conversations reminded us that some of the most powerful learning happens when we learn with one another.
