Happy Friday! This week’s shout-out goes to the faculty who support our students in Academic Coaching. Academic Coaching is a welcoming space where students put the strategies they learn in Learning Strategies into practice. Led by Wolcott faculty representing every department, Academic Coaching runs Monday through Thursday from 3:30–5:00 p.m. and is included with tuition. Students can drop in voluntarily or attend by teacher recommendation. Each session offers access to subject-specific expertise.

As the quarter winds down, it’s a good place to manage time, stay on track, and build confidence. Thank you for all you do, teachers. Keep up the great work, students!

Mr. BK spent last week at the 2026 FIRST Global Challenge in Incheon, South Korea, an international youth robotics “Olympics” with teams from 186 nations.

Teams competed in a common game, Igniting Innovation, with robots much like the ones our FIRST Tech Challenge teams build. Mr. Bowns-Kamphuis served as an announcing volunteer, sharing the teams’ work with viewers around the world, and learned what youth robotics looks like in other communities and cultures.

The goal is for the Bionic Wolves and Spark Sisters to learn from and support the international youth robotics movement.

Lab 4 of 5: students put their DNA on the gel.
This unit started in the courtyard, where students trapped arthropods and identified them to at least the order level. They crushed the bugs to extract and stabilize the DNA, then used the miniPCR to amplify two genes: CO1 from the arthropod and 16S rRNA from Wolbachia, a bacterium.

Last week, they ran the samples on a gel to see their DNA. It also tells them whether their extraction worked.

Next, the samples go to a lab for sequencing. When the results come back, students will use the DNA code to identify each arthropod.

Last week, the World Language Department partnered with Casa de Raza/Latin Student Union to welcome performers from Son Monarcas, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The Nahui Ollin performers shared traditional Aztec dress, music, dance, and storytelling. Then they invited students up on stage, and a good number of them joined in.

Thank you to Son Monarcas, Casa de Raza/Latin Student Union, and our World Language Department for sharing this with the entire school.

Our students are at the JPMorganChase Student Symposium in Chicago today.
The symposium is designed for college students preparing to enter the workforce. JPMorganChase invited Wolcott students to come along and see what an event like this is like. They’re hearing from company leaders, touring the Chicago Corporate Center, and joining the workforce readiness activities.
